I was actually a little unsure going into this. I’ve read that this book holds a very feminist message, and I, as you should know, am not a feminist. Of course, I will not abstain from reading books with light feminist themes, partly because it’s hard to find books (even Christian ones) without messages like that.
The plot was slow-going. I’m usually one to enjoy books with slower plots because that means I get to enjoy the book more, it has more depth than just being a “page-turner” but this was more “I just didn’t feel like going on.” I was tempted to dnf multiple times, but I hate not finishing books.
Though it was quite a unique take on Cinderella, it did take away the whole message of Cinderella being an example of loving one’s enemies, as the Grimm brothers wrote it to be, and more, “I have no choice but to work for you.”
Also, this was a retelling of a retelling. Very much based on the Disney movie, and not much the original Grimm fairytale. Many might not know this, but in the Grimm fairytale, the stepsisters were actually very beautiful, but ugly in heart. I’m wanting to find Cinderella books that are based off of the original fairytale, not the Disney movie.
Positive note: I did find a biblical message in this, and I’ll elaborate in my “personal thoughts” section
ˋ°•*⁀➷ writing ⋆˚𝜗𝜚˚⋆
If I’m being honest, it was bland. Nothing special. To be expected from a children’s book. So I’m not going to go too in-depth on the writing quality here, since complex and flowery writing isn’t present in children’s books often. Though I would like there to be more of that. Challenge the younglings, as Yoda would say.
ˋ°•*⁀➷ personal thoughts ⋆˚𝜗𝜚˚⋆
I think the theme of this book (obedience) perfectly illustrates what Christians mean by obeying God. There is nothing wrong with obedience, but when it becomes mandatory, where you have no choice but to obey, then it is not willful. God wants us to obey willfully, He wants us to choose to follow Him.
That is why He put the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. If God did not give us a choice to obey Him, we would be robots, just obeying Him because we didn’t have any other choice. But Adam and Eve chose to disobey Him. The devil did not force them to, nobody shoved the fruit down their throats, they chose it, they knew well that God forbade it, and yet they disobeyed.
As Christians, we choose to obey God and His law. There is always a choice to disobey, to not follow His law. But like a parent punishes their child of disobedience, our disobedience against God will be punished if we do not repent of it. That’s just the little snippet of the gospel I found in this.

I feel so bad not liking this! so many people loved it! but I really didn’t like it, it was slow-going, I didn’t care for much of the characters, and it just wasn’t my type of book. the romance was cute, however, so I give it that. rtc

Sorry this is off topic from the book, but I’m curious what you mean when you say you’re not feminist/don’t support it. By definition feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of equality of the sexes. I know a lot of people twist what being feminist means, and are turning it into “women are better than men” but I’m curious if you agree with the actual definition, that being that both genders (male and female) are equal.
Jaycee Ann ✝️ wrote: "Sorry this is off topic from the book, but I’m curious what you mean when you say you’re not feminist/don’t support it. As a Christian, I believe we are all created equally by God. I believe women have the same value as men, but both men and women have different roles biblically, and feminism has become “I can do anything a man can do” and women can’t. men can’t do everything women can do either. Genesis 3:16 was a big factor in my shift from having a feminist mindset to not supporting it :)
