Winter Garden

The set up of this story is slow, but I’ve found most of Kristin Hanna’s books are written this way… you don’t realize you’re so connected to the characters until you’re crying the last few pages. But on the other hand, this one had me a bit bored and waiting too long to hear their mother’s fairytale
The past and present timelines were both written seamlessly, getting from each scene & the themes of hardship, heartbreak, family & how “words matter” is strongly shown through both. I enjoyed seeing these women reshape their relationships and learn more about themselves and each other. It’s definitely left me wanting to ask loved ones more questions before it’s too late!

Commenting again that you HAVE to read The Bronze Horseman!! Lots of similarities between it and Winter Garden but takes place in Leningrad!
Not realizing you’re connected to the characters until the end is best possible way to describe this book. It was just okay for all the way through… but then the end tied it all together so nicely and by the time it was over I actually really enjoyed it. Not Kristin’s best, but still a good read!
That was my main criticism too. The first part was too drawn out and could have been condensed. Loved the last 20% of the book though. Not my favourite of Kristin’s but even so, a great read.
I'm sorry. If I get through 150 pages and it's the same rehashing of woe is me and the story isn't unfolding, I have to move on. I hate giving up with a book, but honestly, goodbye.
I totally agree!! Didn’t start to pick up until at least half way through the book. Could have done with less character build up between the sisters. Almost gave up on it but wanted to hang on to see where the fairytale would take me.
I also agree Sara ! I was actually getting annoyed for the first half of the book. Even as the fairytale began I was annoyed. But the last half of the book completely drew me in. Kristin Hannah writes these historical war novels with such heart engaging and heart wrenching descriptions ! For a book I was annoyed with for half of it, I stilled ended in tears at the end of this book. Not her best but I did enjoy it.
I’m reading it now and I feel the same! Is the story ever going to start?! Glad to hear the ending is good so I’ll push through, otherwise I would probably not finish.
I literally had to go back to my library and check the author and publish date of the Bronze Horseman while reading this Either every single family in Leningrad had the exact same experience or ? Was KH inspired by the other story? Felt way too similar
lol this review is so spot on . I almost didn’t keep going with it but after 200 pages it really picked up and then I couldn’t put it down, then found myself crying at the end because I felt so connected to the characters without even realizing it. I would rank this #3 out of all the Kristin Hannah books I’ve read , #1 being the nightingale and #2 being the women . Next up - the Great Alone !
