Deliverance

Deliverance by James Dickey was a book that really took me by surprise. Outside of my comfort zone Deliverance tells the story of four men closing in on middle age and looking for a little adventure take to the remote white waster river in the Georgia wilderness with two canoes. The adventure turns to a nightmare and a struggle for survival.
I honestly had never heard of this book and for me this was a challenge as I don't read adventure stories. This was a brilliant and breath taking adventure and the prose is raw and imaginative and I found myself in the midst the rocks and rapids, the beauty of the wild and the terror and violence that was so real it had me exclaiming out loud.
The characters are real and extremely well drawn and I really enjoyed reading the character of Ed and experiencing the journey through his eyes.
This was a great read but is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. Its a short novel and extremely well written and I am so glad I read it. I just found out that it is also a movie so look forward to that now I have read the book.

There is a part in the movie that still haunts me to this day. I think it was back in the seventies when I saw it so you can see it has been awhile.
Where have I been hiding Diane, everyone I mention this book to has seen the movie. I need to watch some of these great films. I am going to order some films today on Amazon take control of the remote and curl up on the couch next weekend. :-) ( wish me luck on the remote bit) .
It is an old movie...but was pretty controversial in it's day....I don't think I knew it came from a book!!(and my hubby says "shame on me" as Dickey is/was a pretty well known Southern writer)

Its great to read some of these classics every now and then, I was reading a magazine last weekend and in the book section they had done an article about authors who were famous back in 20s 30s and 40s and the article had recommended a book by each author and I added them to my books as had never heard of any of the authors or books. It was a great article and nice to see great books from the past being mentioned.

Same here! It was a shocker. The movie made me NOT want to read the book.
