Read 2 times. Last read March 18, 2025 to March 20, 2025.
Moon Called hit shelves right when urban fantasy was at its peak (almost 20 years ago), when everyone was devouring stories about fierce, no-nonsense heroines who could throw a punch and take one too. These books feature strong, sensitive female leads with plenty of bite, zero Fs to give, and just a touch of spice (if you don’t mind waiting a few books).
Mercy is one of my favorites. She is fiercely independent, intelligent, and resourceful, everything I love in a lead character. She is also a Volkswagen mechanic, and a Walker who can shift into a coyote at will.
I have to say it, these covers suck. Mercy would be furious to see herself running around in a crop top and low-rise jeans, with a push-up bra working overtime. Because, yeah, that’s totally her, not fixing cars, delivering snarky comebacks, and kicking supernatural ass. It’s a shame because the story is so much better than the cover suggests.
PNR/Urban Fantasy
Werewolf neighbor
Gremlin former boss
Vampire client
Strong fmc
Fighting action
No steam
Mystery
My other UF favorites, the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, Cat from The Night Huntress series, Meg from Anne Bishop’s The Others, and Rachel Morgan from Kim Harrison’s The Hallows.

Yay!! I'm so happy you enjoyed your re-read. I've been meaning to try out Kim Harrisons books. I'll have to give them a look-see.

Thank you, Dakota! I picked up these books after reading your review, and feeling like it was a good time for a reread 💜🙌 I’m completely sucked back into this world. I hope you like the Harrison books!
ha ha back in the day I would look at this book and the cover and wonder if I wanted to read it. I finally bought it and fell in love, but I understand what you say. I haven't read the last 2 books out, but its such a good series. This reminds me I need to catch up.
I only ever read the first Night Huntress book, and not any of the other series, but i feel like i might have to go check this one out then ;)
Great review, Rain! I‘m glad you loved this so much. I will have to check out the other UF books you mentioned; I’ve only read Ilona Andrews so far. Thanks for the recommendations!!

I hope you like this one if you give it a read 😊
