You have to read the earlier stuff! Washington Square, or The Europeans.

I really liked What Maisie Knew, a very vicious novel, and the earlier stuff is quite jolly and light, and The Turn of the Screw is essential, but I think anyone who's got though The Golden Bowl without dying of asphyxiation deserves a medal on which there should be a tiny picture of HJ saying "your duty to literature is now fulfilled"
SERIOUSLY! Henry James is like one of those guys who started out making great, catchy three minute rock n' roll songs, but later in his career got waaaaaay too into psychadelics and esoteric eastern spirituality, and wound up recording incomprehensible six-hour concept albums with electronic instruments and no lyrics.Don't write off the young James for what he ultimately became!
I have to read it for a postgrad course, I want to get off this ride but the ride never ends. The words, the words never end. And they mean nothing.
I felt exactly the same after a Turn of the Screw. By the end of that I was just page-flipping and eyeball-scanning.
