Of Human Bondage

I discovered the famous author W. Somerset Maugham from a radio podcast I listened to about ten years ago.
Of Human Bondage follows Philip Carey, a young man born with a clubfoot, as he navigates his long and winding journey through life.
Orphaned and lonely, he moves through childhood and adolescence with a deep sense of isolation, always longing for connection and acceptance.
It is a captivating story of growth and self-discovery, leaving readers with a quiet sense of hope and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
It almost took me four months to finish this book, thanks to my turtle-reading speed. 🐢
The book is thick, and I kept comparing it to Murakami’s 1Q84. 🤣

It took me a few months to finish it because I enjoyed reading it slowly. I could feel the ambience and surroundings when I read this story. I felt very cold, especially in the winter of the story. One of the best writers I ever read.

Terrific review Liong, thank you! You might enjoy The House of Doors which is a historical fiction about the time W. Somerset Maugham was in Malaysia and gathering material for The Casuarina Tree.

Turtle-reading speed? In all seriousness I was admiring your heart-touching review until I read that line and laughed out loud!
