I read this book when it was first released, before the absolutely terrible film adaption was released - I should probably say no more about that as I will tear it to pieces.
Ella is accidentally cursed at birth by a young fairy who bestows on her the gift of obedience, meaning she has to do what anyone asks of her. But Ella has spark and does not allow this curse to make her docile, she rebels at every turn. When her mother dies she is left in the care of her absent father and later her stepmother and two horrible stepsisters, Ella decides enough is enough and sets on a journey of freedom as she determined to find Lucinda and make her remove this curse. Along the way she makes new friends and falls in love.
I loved the book, it is superior to the awful film adaption - Ella in the book is strong she is not a simpering damsel waiting to be saved like in the film. This was a favourite book as a teenager, loved the storyline, loved the plot and loved Ella as she wasn’t waiting for anyone to rescue her - she went off to rescue herself. Lucinda was as the most incompetent fairy all of her gifts went wrong lol, I think she meant well but as they say the road to hell paved with good intentions. I loved Ella godmother, her real fairy godmother, overall this was a real feel good book about discovering yourself.

Yes! Ella in the book is such a powerhouse compared to the movie version 😍 I love how she takes charge of her own story and the chaotic charm of Lucinda only makes it funnier. A true feel-good, self-empowerment classic!
