Pure Classicness. Part II.

Yet another collection by legendary Poe. What is there to say? I love completionism! Another good but scarcely great mixed bag of sorts. You can always count on good ol’ Poe to get the job done… in an old fashioned convoluted kind of way. Thank God there was no poetry this time.

Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

The Best :
★★★★☆ “The Black Cat.”
★★★★☆ "The Fall of the House of Usher." [3.5]
★★★★☆ “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket.” [3.5]

The Good :
★★★☆☆ "The Tell-Tale Heart."
★★★☆☆ “The Cask of Amontillado.”
★★★☆☆ “The Masque of the Red Death.”
★★★☆☆ “The Pit and the Pendulum.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “A Descent into the Maelström.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “The Purloined Letter.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “MS. Found in a Bottle.” [2.5]

The Meh :
★★☆☆☆ “The Man that Was Used Up.” [2.5]
★★☆☆☆ “The Balloon-Hoax.”
★★☆☆☆ “Diddling.” [1.5]
★☆☆☆☆ “The Assignation.” [1.5]

It’s public domain. You can find it Vol 1. HERE, and Vol 2. HERE, and Vol 3. HERE.

PERSONAL NOTE :
[1845] [262p] [Collection] [Partly Recommendable]

★★★☆☆ The Essential Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe
★★☆☆☆ The Complete Stories and Poems
★★★☆☆ The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Writings
★★★☆☆ The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales
★☆☆☆☆ The Raven and Other Poems

Puro Clasicismo. Parte II.

★★★★☆ “La Narrativa de A. Gordon Pym.” [3.5]

Lo Bueno :
★★★☆☆ “El Corazón Revelador.”
★★★☆☆ “El Barril de Amontillado.”
★★★☆☆ “La Máscara de la Muerte Roja.”
★★★☆☆ “El Pozo y el Péndulo.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “Los Crímenes de la Rue Morgue.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “Un Descenso Dentro del Maelstrom.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “La Carta Robada.” [2.5]
★★★☆☆ “Manuscrito Hallado en una Botella.” [2.5]

Lo Meh :
★★☆☆☆ “El Hombre que se Acabó.” [2.5]
★★☆☆☆ “El Infundio del Globo.”
★★☆☆☆ “El Arte de Timar.” [1.5]

The gods have graced me with a poetry-less book, this time. Thank you Amina! Glad to see you enjoy Poe too sometimes :)

A. Linda reseña, Fede. En líneas generales, parece que los humanos tenemos tendencia a completar las tareas comenzadas porque hay cierta incomodidad en no hacerlo. Aunque claramente algunos la sobrellevan mejor que otros 😁 En general, parece que predominó "lo bueno". Me alegra, Fede. Un abrazo.

Fiza Pathan An excellent review Federico! Glad you enjoyed this classic & rewarded it 3 stars! I can see that you are reading all of the classic horror writers of the 18th & 19th century, don't forget Bram Stoker while you are at it - you won't regret it! Are you a University student? Studying for your Masters or Ph.D? You seem like one! Would love to know. Happy Reading to you & have a blissful week! Kudos! :)

Srivalli (Semi-Hiatus) Fewer mehs this time. The book got saved due to lack of poems, lol. Nice a horror collection to satisfy the reader. ;) Excellent review, Federico.

Creo que hay una rama de la psicología que habla de eso. Por ej. si vemos in círculo incompleto, tendemos a completarlo xD. Creo que mis reseñas delatan mucho que soy de esos que les gusta todo completito y ordenadito jaja. Muchas gracias Lady A.! Que la semana la trate bien :)

Thank you Fiza! I'm in a classics binge but dunno how long it will last, it's sort of by chance. I read Bram Stoker's Dracula already; might try something else someday but doubt it. After trying several careers at university I received my MBA around half a decade ago. Boring stuff as hell, but since I started so many before I decided to at least finish one, for once, so that's what I got. Happy Readings for you too Fiza <3!

Fewer poetry this time lol. Poe can decently satisfy anyone's lust for horror I think xD. Thank you Srivalli

Debbie Y Mix bag is just about right, as I felt the same about it. I’m glad you found it somewhat enjoyable, Federico! :)

message 26: by Thibault (new)

Thibault Busschots Sounds like a very mixed bag indeed. But the atmospheric setting is what Poe does best, so I hope that was done justice in at least most of the stories. Good review, Federico.

Absolutely, by quantity and quality Good clearly won over Meh this time xD. Thank you Thibault!

An MBA, amazing Federico! I thought that you were a Literature student because of your love for the classics & your eclectic choice of books. Hope you enjoy your classic binge reads, rooting for you! Glad you read Stoker's 'Dracula', but you will also like his shorter fiction, I'm sure, unless 'Dracula' bored you - it does bore some readers. Happy Reading! Thanks for getting back to me, I love your comments! Cheers to you Federico MBA! :)

Federico DN Fiza wrote: "I thought that you were a Literature student because of your love for the classics & your eclectic choice of books. Hope you enjoy your classic binge..."

Thank you so much Fiza! Although I wouldn't go as far as to say I love classics, in fact sometimes I hate them lol. I mean I do have a very intense desire to know the greatest books universal literature has to offer from each country through history, and that's the reason why I've read many of them; but in truth most of the time it just happens by accident because I "borrow" stuff from my parent's bookcase, or because I buy the cheapest used books ever and for some reason they usually happen to be classics lol. That's also a big part of the why of my 'eclectic' choices. I pick the cheapest used books blindly, so naturally, it's literature roulette. I do sincerely love varying genres and reading blindly though, it keeps the surprise ever intact; and occasionally I do get to pick something because I want to, and that's the reason for the modern "trending" stuff lol. It's a weird system I know, but it works for me xD.

message 35: by Ron (new)

Ron Great Poe-etic review Federico. Now some of these story names look the same as the other collection you read. I've seen that often occurring with collections though - as if Poe hadn't written enough to fill 10 volumes. Guess they want popular ones to attract readers?

Thank you Ron! Poe-etic LOL. That's gold xD. Indeed, many of these famous collections and anthologies tend to share many stories in common. I'm slowly reading his full bibliography and I can tell you all his works can be neatly compressed in 5 volumes, or so Project Gutenberg has done.

message 37: by Yun (new)

Yun Great review, Federico! I'm trying to think if I've ever read Poe and I don't think so. Must remedy that! :)
