Normally, I would never read something like this. No, I am not homophobic (my older brother is gay); but I do get uncomfortable when reading about two men kissing. So, needless to say, I wasn't expecting much from this very short novella.
Let me be the first to say how utterly wrong I was. This novella is not merely about two men who fall in love; it is about love itself. The love story these men share is intense, stormy, beautiful, and heart-wrenching, and I found myself thankful that I have only ever loved one woman my entire life--I duped her into marrying me later--and, therefore, have never had my heart broken.
Put away your preconceived ideas and give this story a chance. If anything, it will only take you a few hours to read. But if you like it, I am sure you will leave this story with a greater insight to what it means to be in love with someone.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Have you seen the film Gavin? Considering the brevity of the source material, I thought the motion picture was superior in many ways, just an amazing movie.

your former discomfort of two men showing affection was homophobia, which you and many other straight people have internalized as a result of living in a society that views straight as "normal" and anything else as unacceptable, and having gay family members doesn't excuse you from it. i'm glad stories that have made people like you see gay men in a more humanized light exist.

But I might take them more to heart if your profile was not private. Regardless, you are entitled to your opinion.
Take nothing to heart fr those with private profiles or whatever they're called. The word "boors" kums to mind.
Thank you for sharing this review. I do feel the knee-jerk reaction to "I'm not homophobic BUT…" and holding up family/friends as a sort of shield (the "I have a black friend" of a generation)… but. Here's MY "but". Your review is nakedly honest and gives me so many feels. I haven't read the story yet, but I've seen the movie. I came on goodreads tonight specifically to add it to my list after hearing about the difference between the story and the movie on a podcast (Crybabies). Seeing your review has definitely inspired me to make a point of reading it!
We all live. We all grow. Thank you for sharing this piece of your journey. :)
"I have only ever loved one woman my entire life--I duped her into marrying me later--and, therefore, have never had my heart broken" What the hell!?
That is nothing short of a perfect first line for a book.
“I do get uncomfortable when reading about two men kissing” my dude that’s homophobia! I feel sorry for your brother.
I agree, definitely homophobia. You wouldn't think twice if it was a man and a woman and the fact that you had to bring up your unease about it being two men, and this being why you weren't expecting much from the book, definitely shows some form of internalized homophobia there.
“I am not homophobic BUT—” You‘re actually being pretty homophobic, even if you don‘t want to realise it. Also, please refrain from using “my older brother is gay” etc. in the future to defend your views. You should start on working on that internalised homophobia and grow as a person asap, dear.
Just bc your brother is gay doesn´t mean you can´t be homophobic. It´s the dumbest excuse ever. Don´t use your brother to cover your homophobia, pls
'I am not homophobic, my brother is gay' is the equivalent of 'I am not racist, I have a black friend.'
I don't know if you realise it by now (after many people having pointed it out to you in this thread itself) that you, are quite homophobic despite your refusal to own up to it. Just came here to say this so that you get the memo.
Great review, just one thing:I'm not homophobic. My older brother is gay.
That's like a man saying: I'm not sexist. I have a daughter.
If you have to say “no I’m notnjomophobic” and on top of that say “but” after you are most definitely homophobic and i feel incredibly sad for your brother. He probably feels uncomfortable around you. Hope this helps
imagine reading a review where some1 talks about how much they loved a GAY love story and calling them homophobic smdh
If men kissing makes you uncomfortable I got some uncomfortable news for your brother. In any case though I appreciate the review. I think people underestimate the impact of media. Brokeback mountain has reached so many people and it rips away the superficiality of it all. It’s an incredibly human story and you saw that. I hope you have it in yourself to challenge and reflect upon things that give you a deep seated discomfort: like that of two men in love kissing.
