The Syrian government and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have agreed on an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, Syrian state media reported on Sunday, after days of fighting as the army advanced into Kurdish-held territories in the northeast of the country.

The Syrian Presidency shared an image of President Ahmed al-Sharaa signing the agreement, along with the full text of the ceasefire terms in Arabic.

The ceasefire will be in parallel with the withdrawal of all SDF-affiliated forces to the east of the Euphrates River, according to the document published by the Syrian Presidency.

The deal entails merging all SDF forces into the defense and interior ministries after conducting required security checks, the statement said.

The government will also immediately and completely take over the Kurdish-held provinces of Deir al-Zor and Raqqa militarily and administratively.

All border crossings and gas and oil fields in the area will also be handed over to the Syrian government.

The SDF will be committed to evacuating all non-Syrian leaders and forces affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) outside of the country.

The document, shared by the Syrian presidency, showed the signatures of both Sharaa and SDF head Mazloum Abdi.

"All lingering files with the SDF will be resolved," state media quoted Sharaa as saying.

He said he was set to meet Abdi on Monday.

US envoy Tom Barrack praises ceasefire agreement

US special envoy Tom Barrack commended the agreement.

It "paves the way for renewed dialogue and cooperation toward a unified Syria," he commented on X/Twitter.

"Two great Syrian leaders, driven by the shared vision of liberating their country and people from tyranny, have now come together to forge a brighter future for all Syrians. This agreement and ceasefire represent a pivotal inflection point, where former adversaries embrace partnership over division," he noted.

"Sharaa has affirmed that the Kurds are an integral part of Syria, and the United States looks forward to the seamless integration of our historic partner in the fight against ISIS with the Global Coalition’s newest member, as we press forward in the enduring battle against terrorism," he added.

"The challenging work of finalizing the details of a comprehensive integration agreement begins now, and the United States stands firmly behind this process at every stage, as we safeguard our vital national security interests in defeating ISIS remnants and advance President Trump’s bold Middle East Peace Plan," he continued.

"The United States is particularly encouraged by this sustained drive to counter ISIS threats, which will facilitate our long-term Kurdish partners’ full onboarding into a united, inclusive Syria that safeguards the interests and rights of all its citizens, while advancing shared goals of reconciliation and national unity by merging the distinct lanes of interest into one cohesive path forward," he concluded.

This is a developing story.
