Statistic Example Problem

The document provides instructions for an individual assignment on analyzing distance data from a paper airplane throwing experiment. 58 students threw paper airplanes using one hand only (set 1 data) and both hands (set 2 data), and the distances were recorded in meters. For each dataset, students were asked to calculate various statistical measures including the mean, median, mode, quartiles, variance and standard deviation. They were also asked to compare the mean and median, construct a stem-and-leaf diagram, and make interpretations about the shape of the distributions. The assignment was due by September 21st, 2017 and failing to submit on time would affect the student's final marks.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1

LECTURER : DR NURSITIHAZLIN BINTI AHMAD TERMIDA

NAME : MUHAMMAD NUR AIMAN BIN ADNAN
NO MATRIC : DF150045
DATE SUBMIT : 19/9/2017

DUE DATE: 21/9/2017

Individual Assignment 1: Date: 14/9/2017
58 students have been asked to build an aeroplane from a piece of paper and throw the
aeroplane using:
(a) One hand only (set 1 data);
(b) Both hands (set 2 data).
Then, they have to measure the distance and record the data which consists of 2 sets of
separate data as shown in TABLE 1. Note that the distance in TABLE 1 has been converted
from unit feet to meters.
Using set 1 (One hand only) and Set 2 (Both hands) datasets:
(1) Calculate the mean, median, mode, first and third quartiles, interquartile range and
75th percentile.
(2) Compute the sample variance and sample standard deviation.
(3) Compare the mean to the median and then comment on the shape of the
distribution.
(4) Construct a stem-and-leaf diagram and state the shortest and longest distance. Then
interpret the distribution.
(5) From the stem-and-leaf diagram constructed in Q(4), construct a Box and Whiskers
plot. Is there any outliers in the data?
Remark: Each dataset need to be analysed separately. Please submit the assignment by
21/09/2017 (Thursday) via email (send to [email protected]). Fail to submit on time
will affect your final marks.

(3) Compare the mean to the median and then comment on the shape of the distribution

Mean for one hand only throw is 3.77 while median is 3.505. This shows that the mean
value is greater that the median value. The shape of distribution will skew to the right or
positively skewed.

(4) Construct a stem-and-leaf diagram and state the shortest and longest distance. Then
interpret the distribution.

The longest distance = 7.9
The distribution from the stem and leaf diagram shows that most data are clustered at the
left side. Therefore, the distribution is skewed to the right or can be known as positively
skewed.
(5) From the stem-and-leaf diagram constructed in Q(4), construct a Box and Whiskers plot.
Is there any outliers in the data?

From the box and whisker plot for one hand distribution above shows that it is positively
skewed distribution because the left whiskers is shorter than the right whiskers and the
median is nearer to Q1. There are no outlier in the data all min and max value are within
