Lecture 5 Quantity Take Off Measuremnet

The document discusses the importance and advantages of preparing bar bending schedules. It states that bar bending schedules should be prepared by design engineers, not site supervisors, to ensure proper reinforcement detailing. Preparing accurate schedules can save construction time and costs through faster execution, reduced steel wastage, improved quality control and stock management. It provides a cost analysis estimating savings of around Rs. 101 per square foot for a 1 lakh square foot building through various factors like steel savings, reduced cutting waste, and decreased construction time. Finally, it shows the standard form for a reinforcement schedule as per IS 2502-1963.

Outline Bar Bending Schedule

Preparation of highly detailed reinforcement drawing and bar bending schedule is

Bar Bending Schedule an essential requirement in the construction field all over the world

• In UK and US – Bar Bending Schedule is prepared by Design Engineers in the

design office
GOOD PRACTICES……
• In India – Bar Bending Schedule is prepared by site engineers or Supervisors at
Sitesite
engineers or the Supervisors - not fully aware of all the design
considerations such as, regarding the anchoring, curtailment and lapping of
reinforcement bars and their positions, particularly in respect of ductile
In the present
detailing construction industry, the

the reinforcement work in India is becoming a bad practice.
So these schedules are to be prepared by the engineers in the design office
only.
Due to lack of skilled labour – poor quality control in bar bending, laying of bars are
not up to the standard and lot of cutting wastage

Advantages of bar bending schedule in concrete construction are: Advantages of bar bending schedule in concrete construction are:

• Steel requirement for next phase of construction can be estimated

• Faster execution – Saves construction time and cost due to less with accuracy and procurement can be done. This prevents stocking
requirement of workers for bar bending. of extra steel reinforcement at site for longer time, preventing
corrosion
• Bar bending also avoids the wastage of steel reinforcement (5 to 10%)
and thus saves project cost. • Auditing of reinforcement and provides checks on theft and pilferage.

• For Fe500, it saves 10% more steel reinforcement compared to fe415. • Bar bending schedule provides the steel quantity requirement much
accurately and thus provides an option to optimize the design in case
• It improves the quality control at site as reinforcement is provided as of cost overrun.
per bar bending schedule
• It enables easy and fast preparation of bills of construction works for
• It provides the better estimation of reinforcement steel requirement for clients and contractors.
each and every structural member which can be used to compute
overall reinforcement requirement for entire project. 1 lakh square feet structure shop drawing preparation can save you
about Rs 1Cr. It is sad to know that every builder is loosing this
• It provides better stock management for reinforcement amount in most of his projects.

COST ANALYSIS ▪ Project time can be reduced as the bars can be cut and bend even before
the formwork is done. Time savings due to automation considered is two
Consider 1 lakh sqft building with 15 stories, with 5kg/sqft steel usage. days for every floor which gives about one month total for 15 storied
Cost of steel considered at Rs 50 per kg. With taxes and bar bending structure.
added, this can be considered Rs 60 per Kg.
Saving in interest cost for one month can be calculated as follows. Consider 1
▪ With BBS the bending quality of Fe500 can be ensured. So that one can month reduction in construction period of 12 months Cost of building 1 lakh sqft
ensure 10% saving with Fe 500 compared to Fe 415, cost saving is 0.5 kg x Rs 2500 per sqft = 25 crores. One month interest @10% per annum = 25
steel results in Rs 30 per sqft. (0.5 x 60 = 60) lakhs which is Rs 25 per sqft

▪ Reduce cutting wastage, Considering 5% wastage reduction due to planning ▪ Savings in labour in steel bending to the tune of Rs 2 per kg, which is Rs 12
in cut and bend operations 5kg/sqft x 0.05 = 0.25 kg x 60 = Rs 15 per sqft per sqft.

▪ Better quality controls at site due to photo like drawings add Rs 2 per sqft. ▪ As the work gets organized, smaller contractors can work on the project at
lesser rate which is not considered here with similar advantages in other
▪ Better Estimation of steel add Rs 2 per sqft, for an error margin of 2% items also..

▪ Detailing without grouping saves 5% reduction in steel. 5kg/sqft x 0.05 = Adding (30 +15 + 2 + 2 + 15 + 25 + 12 = 101) the savings side together it is Rs
0.25 kg = Rs 15 per sqft 101 per sqft that equals to 1 Cr For 1lakh square feet.

❑ Number of bars:
Suppose the spacing of stirrups is 120 c/c and the length along which they are
placed is 8m, we can find the number of stirrups by the formula below
[ Length / Spacing ] + 1 = number of bars
[ 8000 / 120 ] + 1 = 66.66
In this case, we always round up. Hence, we require 67 stirrups.

❑ Cutting Length:
We must remember than steel is ductile in nature and is subject to elongation.
Hence, the length of a bar is increased when bends or hooks are introduced.
Hence, certain deductions are needed to offset this increase in length.
Cutting Length = True Length of a bar – Deductions
For 45 degree
Cutting length = Total length – 1 x Dia of bar x No. of bends
For 90 degree
Cutting length = Total length – 2 x Dia of bar x No. of bends

90 degree hook:
Length of stirrup = (2A + 2B) + 20 x dia
All Dimensions are in mm
Cover = 40mm
Beam Type = B1
Number of Beams B1 = 5

135 degree hook:

Length of stirrup = (2A + 2B) + 24 x dia
