Guide Questions
1. What is the meaning of Sinawali?
2. What is Single Sinawali?
3. What is the basic movement of Sinawali?

Answer to Guide Questions

1. While it was widely known as Arnis, other names have been used to designate it,
such as Estocada or pananandata among the Tagalogs, Kaliradman or
Pangaradman for the Visayans, the Pangasinense use the Kaligrongan,
Kabaraon by the Ilocanos, the Ibanags call it Pagkali-kali, and the
Pampanguenos refer to it as Sinawali. Sinawali comes from the Filipino term
“Sawali” which refers to the pattern used in weaving bamboos which have been
split lengthwise, and the resulting frame is used as walls of bamboo houses.

2. The Single Sinawali is an offensive tactic used to hit the right and left temples
and knees alternately. This Sinawali must be taught and practiced with the
novices paired up.

3. The basic movements used in sinawali are based on the vital points for striking.
As skill is acquired, the pair should be encouraged to move in different directions
while executing the movements. (From Stationary to Forward and Backward,
Clockwise and Counterclockwise or in Random Directions.)
