CHIPKO MOVEMENT
SCRIPT
SCENE 1 – TODAY’S MOVEMENT
Narrator: In today’s world, the neglect for forest conservation is
widespread. So, why should we care about it? It is important as
loss of forest cover results in global warming, which, in turn, is
leading to climate change, and we, the younger generation will
inherit it and suffer. Today, my team and I are going to present
a skit about chipko movement, a movement that was started to
conserve trees.
Protester 1: Stop the machine! These are not your trees to cut!
Protester 2: Our life is completely dependent on these trees. I
will not let you chop down our lifeline!
Builder 1: How are they your lifeline? Get aside, we have
received permission from the government to build a multi-star
hotel here.
Protester 3: The trees give us the breath of life! They bear fruits
that we eat, and some of their parts have medicinal uses! I
don’t see your hotel providing us these things!
Protester 4: yes! I will not allow the construction of something
that harms Mother Nature. I will protect these trees and not
give up!
Other protesters: Yes! (Shouting slogans)
Builder 2: We have already bought this land, it belongs to us.
We have invested so much into this! You can’t decide what to
do with our property!
Protester 5: the trees are a greater asset to humanity than a
hotel. Leave your selfish attitude and think about the greater
good of the society. We protesters are going to fight for the
lives of these trees the same way our ancestors did.

Protester 1: Yes! What are we doing, there is no use protesting

like this. Let’s follow the footsteps of our ancestors and hug the
trees.
Narrator: It is not only in recent times that people have become
aware about conserving trees. This movement dates back to
the 1730s, where the act of brave, environment-loving villagers
of the bhishnoi community of Mewar, Rajasthan made people
realize the importance of trees.

SCENE 2 – 1730 MOVEMENT

(People rushing to trees to hug them)
Bhishnoi woman 1: arrey paachhe hato in pedan se! inha ne
kaate thaare-maare balak bhi katenge!
Amrita Devi: je ped maare khandan barabar hain.je maare ramji
ki kirpa hain. Tham inhaane kaat nhi nhi sakte!
ho?
Bhishnoi woman 2: je pedan me kitne hi janaavar basse hain.
Maari paramparayen, prathaayen aur din bhar ki zarooratein,
Woodcutter1 : arrey chhori pare hoja! Hukkum sa ne kahi
hai,lakkad chahiye hi chahiye!
hai!
(the woodcutter swings his axe and amrita devi is beheaded)
Amrita’s daughter: bhabo! Thari bali khaali na jaane denge
hum, hum in pedan ki hifaazat maari jaan ke saath karenge!
Woodcutter2 (to rest of the villagers): chal girdhar..je pedan ne
kaatein, aur jo kaate me bole…usan ko kaat devenge!
Bhishnoi villager 1-je maari peedhiyon ka sahaara hai, maara
jeevan inhan ke aage choorma barabar hai!
(all villagers hug the trees and refuse to let go of them. The
woodcutters get angry and offended and swing their axes,
killing many villagers on the spot.)
maare hua hai! Ab maare ko unha se hi bolni padegi!

(At the palace)

(villagers rush into the palace, followed by minister and
woodcutters)

gaaye barabar gao waalo ko kyu pedan ki keemat denim padi?!

nhi karega!!

Narrator: hence, we see that the sacrifice of amrita devi

bhishnoi and hundreds of other environment loving people did
not go to waste. It shows us that small efforts make big
changes, and that we, as young people have to make those in
power bend down and make those changes.
