I. B. COMMUNICATION AND GLOBALIZATION
Speech and language are the most prominent cognitive functions that distinguish human beings from animals.
Man is the only talkative creature on the face of the earth; he is only the created being that can communicate his
thoughts, feelings, desires and ideas by means of speech.
Speech is the tool that leads to mutual understanding and appreciation; hence, speech is an important means of
employing and developing God-given faculties.
1. Communication
Is the lifeblood of an organization
The process by which people seek to share meaning via the transmission of symbolic
messages.
a. Communication involves people – to understand how people relate to each other.
b. Communication involves shared meaning – agree on the definitions of the terms
they are using.
c. Communication involves symbols – gestures, sounds, letters, numbers, and words
can only represent or approximate the ideas that they are meant to communicate.
2. Nature and Importance of Communication
a. Communication is derived from the Latin word “common” which means, “belonging to
many” or “equally” and “communico”- to confer with others. It is the mutual exchange of
information, ideas, and understanding by effective means.
b. Effective communication implies good or pleasant speech and requires a clear, adequate voice
which is easily understood; accurate in the production of the individual sounds, and in the
selection of words.
c. Communication is the key to becoming inclined to progress and advancement and in
continuing to learn things more accurately and effectively through speech.
d. Oral communication is an endless cycle, which always involves two persons or more: a
decoder and an encoder; the message, the channel and the feedback.
e. Communication is the art of transmitting information, ideas and attitudes from one person to
another by any effective means.
f. Communication is the interaction of words from a society and thus gives pleasure and an
increased understanding of life.
g. Each person communicates with a message through one or more of his senses, sight, taste,
sound, touch or smell.
3. Characteristics of Communication
a. Communication is dynamic
Act individually and interact with each other
Not a sole act but varied actions that produce certain effects with corresponding
results
b. Communication is continuous
Spontaneity in the process
There is no beginning and no end in communication
1
Though death may end the role as a receiver, it does not stop our role as a source.
c. Communication is a complex process
There is a reason why people communicate
Achieving worthwhile communication is difficult – transfer of ideas from one person
to another is a complex thing.
Interpretation can cause complexity
d. Communication is irreversible
No turning back in communication
Once you sent and received a message, the effect it produces becomes a factor in all
incoming messages.
e. Communication is nonsequential
All the elements are constantly interchanging
f. Communication is unrepeatable
Can’t re-create an act of communication
Note: In short, communication is a process consisting of a number of independent and interdependent steps leading
to the attainment of an end. In speech communication that end is the developing and sharing of some specific
meaning (Bradley, 1988).
According to Hitachi, Ltd., of Japan: “Communication is not simply sending a message. It is creating true
understanding—swiftly, clearly, and precisely.”
Enhancement Activity/Outcome:
Direction: Choose one of the following words. Write at least one paragraph that shows what you mean by the word
and how you would use it. Provide first s definition and then an example.
Model: modesty Modesty is a character trait that makes people reluctant to advertise their good
points or to accept praise. I once knew a boy who spent many hours helping
our drama club get ready for a play. Nevertheless, he refused to let his name
appear in the printed program.
