Introduction
Objective of the talk.
a. To increase the understanding among students and teachers about what bullying is, its
different forms and its harmful effects.
b. To Educate students on how to recognize bullying behaviour and provide them with
strategies to prevent bullying from happening in their school and community.
c. To empower students to stand up against bullying, support their peers and create a
positive and inclusive school environment.
Understanding Bullying
1. Empirical Statistic on the bullying cases in Malaysia.
2. Definition of Bullying.
a. Bullying is an act by one or more individual’s using force or violence, which
can be intimidating, disturbing, humiliating, or hurting others through various
methods, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally, resulting in physical
injury or emotional distress to the victim.

3. Different Forms of Bullying (Physical, Verbal, Social, Cyberbullying)


a. Physical Bullying
i. Hitting, pinching, kicking, spitting
ii. Punching, slapping, stealing
iii. Hiding/Damaging belongings
iv. Forcing the victim to do unwanted things
v. Involving violence/aggression towards the body.

b. Verbal Bullying
i. Teasing, taunting, insulting
ii. Mocking physical appearance, skin colour, ethnic background,
disabilities.
iii. Swearing, curing, ridiculing, mocking with words.
iv. Using derogatory names or labels
v. Conducted through conversation
c. Non-Verbal Bullying
i. Rolling eyes, smirking/sneering
ii. Sticking out tongue, making obscene gestures
iii. Psychological attack
iv. Through actions like exclusion (boycott/isolation/banishment)
v. Done through gestures/body language and facial expressions.

d. Cyberbullying
i. Actions aimed at intimidating, angering, and humiliating someone
using communication facilities using technology.
ii. Blocking or removing someone from a social media group or blocking
their emails without reason.
iii. Deceiving someone by disclosing personal information and spreading
it to others.
iv. Hacking someone’s email/social media account to send fake message
impersonating the account owner.

4. Different between conflict and Bully


a. Conflict
Conflict happens when two or more people have different ideas or feelings
about something. It's like when you and your friend can't agree on which game
to play, or when you both want to sit in the same spot during lunchtime. Conflict
is normal and happens sometimes when people have different opinions.
i. It’s when people disagree or have different feelings.
ii. Both people involved are usually equally strong or powerful.
iii. It’s not meant to hurt anyone and it can often be solved by talking and
finding a compromise.
iv. Once the problem is solved, the conflict usually goes away.

b. Bullying
Bullying is different from conflict. It's when one person is mean to another
person over and over again, and they do it on purpose to hurt them. It's like if
someone keeps saying mean things to you every day, or they try to take your
things or push you around all the time.
i. Bullying happens when one person tries to be mean or hurtful to
someone else on purpose.
ii. The person being mean aften has more power or is stronger than the
other person.
iii. It’s not fair, and it’s not okay. No one deserves to be treated badly.
iv. Bullying doesn’t usually stop by itself, and it’s important to tell an adult
if it’s happening to you or someone you know.

i. Emotional Stress

iii. Decline in academic performance

6. Causes of Bullying Behaviour


a. Family Circumstances
i. Lack of attention and affection
ii. Lack of religious education
iii. Differences in parenting styles
iv. Limitation of lifestyle within the family
v. Lack of monitoring

b. Individual Attitudes
i. Body size
ii. Quick temper
iii. Grudge due to past bullying experiences
iv. Gender confusion
v. Self-concept
vi. Desire for attention.

c. Environment
i. Desire for peer recognition
ii. Community institutions that are less caring.

d. Media-related factors
i. Programs or shows with violent themes
ii. Negative content on the internet
iii. Video games promoting violence.
Implication of the law for bullies
Two punishments await bullies:
1. Disciplinary action by the school
2. Legal Action

School Action (Student Discipline Procedures – School Regulations 1959)


• Verbal Warning
• Written Warning
• Detention
• Caning
• Suspension
• Expulsion

Legal Action
• Fine up to RM 50,000
• Whipping up to 10 times
• Imprisonment up to 10 years
• Court Order for Moral Rehabilitation School
• Criminal Offenses Act

Preventive Measures Against Bullying Implementation Series of Bullying Prevention
School Authorities
1. Students are advised to fill out bullying survey forms for early prevention measures
2. Obtain information on bullying cases in school and handle them seriously.
3. Tighten surveillance in strategic areas within the school.
Teachers
1. Display bullying-related rules in every class
2. Enforce the behaviour pledge letter to newly enrolled students.
3. Take immediate action on received bullying complaints.
Students
1. Be Brave to Report, Say NO to bullying (Assertive Behaviour)
2. Choose Friends Wisely
3. Differentiate Between Positive and Negative Attitudes.
