Module 4-1

This document outlines a module for modeling an inspection center in a manufacturing system using Arena software, focusing on resource allocation and processing of multiple entities. It includes objectives, a model problem involving parts with different attributes, and a detailed procedure for creating a simulation model. Additionally, it discusses results and analysis questions related to inspection time, inspector workload, and system optimization.

Objectives
 To introduce the concept of entities with multiple attributes
 To report the use of assignment module
 To report the use of resource allocation
 To perform the processing of multiple entities with different processing requirements
 Data input and extracting the end results for output analysis

Model Problem

Assume that parts arrive at an inspection center for repair where an inspector does the inspection.
The entities are having different arrival time and are different in number per one arrival. Upon
arrival on inspection station each entity type takes different time for its inspection. Create a single
server model in ARENA with the following data:
Parts Inter-Arrival Entities per Inspection time Picture Inspection
time arrival Resource
Part A 1 minute 1 3 minutes Red ball Inspector

Part B 3 minute 2 1 minutes Blue ball Inspector

Apparatus
1. Laptop/computer
2. ARENA software
Procedure

Module to be
used Figure 1
Steps to be followed
1. Drag the CREATE module in the arena window and put the inter arrival time.
2. Drag the ASSIGN Parts module, in the arena window.
3. Drag the PROCES module, and enter the process time.
4. Drag the DISPOSE Module: to Dispose the Parts
Enter the data according to the given figures in following sequence
1. Put Data into create module as given in figure 2
2. Put data into Process module for resource as given in figure 3
3. Put data into assign module as given in figure 4,5,6,7 and 8
4. Put data into process module for inspection time as given in figure 9

Results and Discussions

Run the model for 60 minutes

How many Part A and Part B entities will arrive in 60 minutes?

What is the total inspection time required for all parts?

Can the inspector handle all parts within 60 minutes?

What is the utilization of the inspector?

Utilization = (Total inspection time / Total available time) * 100

How can we reduce the inspector's workload?

What happens if we add a second inspector?

How many parts will be waiting in the queue at any given time?

What is the average waiting time for parts in the queue?

What is the bottleneck in the system?

How can we optimize the system?
