Step 1:Define problem and goal
• Identify and describe
the issue and the
ultimate objective
• Consider:
– What do you want to accomplish?
– What are the requirements?
– Are there any limitations?
– Who is the customer?
Step 2: Research
• Gather information and investigate existing
technologies related to the problem
• Talk to individuals who share this problem and could
benefit from possible solutions

Step 3: Imagine possible
solutions
• Brainstorm ideas.
• Be creative and build upon the ideas of others.
• Explore and compare many possible designs within
your group.
• Be open-minded!

Step 4: Choose a solution
• What materials and tools are needed?
• Consider environmental, cultural, time, and financial
issues and constraints.
• Select the most feasible idea and assign team tasks.

Step 5: Create & test
prototype
• Build a protoype
– Protoype - an operating version of a solution. It is often made
with different materials (cheaper and easier to work with) than
the final version. They allow you to test your solution and supply
feedback. (2)
• Push yourself and the group for creativity, imagination,
and excellence in design.

Step 6: Improve
• Share results and continue
to seek how your team
could make the solution
better.
• Iterate your design to Image taken from:

it can be.
– Iterate - to repeat an already
completed task to
incorporate new information (3)

2. Problem
• Include a formal problem statementDefinition
• Problem statement = clear description of the issue that needs to be
addressed
Keep the design team on track
Used to measure the outcome
• Must answer 03 key questions:
What is the problem or need?
Who has the problem or need?
Why is it important to solve?

what Definition
does the world look like if we solve
the problem?
Issue Statement: describe the problem using
specific issues. (1-2 sentences)
Method: the process to solve the problem.

those who haveDefinition
to hand wash their laundry
can have more time and energy to enjoy life. (Vision)
Hand washing has been consuming a considerable
amount of time and is indeed very labor intensive. If we
ignore this problem, washing will become a terrible
obsession for many, especially housewives and singles,
therefore reducing their life quality. (Issue statement)
We will use a rotating drum to develop a machine that
cleans dirty laundry (Method)

UNIT 1: ENGINEERING DESIGN
• Identify information needed PROCESS
• What kind of data do we need to design a washing machine?
3. Data Collection
Customers’ needs (functions, different washing

•02 metal cylinders:
– Outer cylinder: water heated
by a fire beneath it.
