Introduction to Engineering Mechanics

Welcome to Engineering
Mechanics

● In this presentation, we will

explore the basics of engineering
mechanics.
● You will learn about the
importance of understanding
forces and interactions in
engineering.
● Let's dive into the world of
mechanics and see how it
shapes our everyday life!
Why Study Engineering
Mechanics?

● Engineering mechanics helps us

understand how and why things
work.
● It is essential for designing safe
and efficient structures and
machines.
● By studying mechanics, we can
prevent engineering failures and
create innovative solutions.
Real-Life Example: Riding a Bike
● Imagine riding a bike on a wet road.
● The force of friction is lower on wet surfaces, increasing the risk
of falling.
● Understanding mechanical interactions helps us avoid such
mishaps.
Learning from Failures

● Many structures like bridges and rockets

have failed due to engineering mistakes.
● These failures often happen because
forces acting on them were neglected.
● We can learn a lot from these failures to
improve future designs.
Engineering Wonders: Burj
Khalifa

● The Burj Khalifa in UAE is the tallest living

structure in the world.
● Its design and operation are based on
engineering mechanics principles.
● From its foundation to its mechanical
systems, every aspect involves
mechanics.
What is Mechanics?
● Mechanics is the science that describes and predicts the
condition of rest or motion of bodies under the action of forces.
● It applies to both simple machines like bicycles and complex
ones like aircraft.
● When applied in engineering, it is called engineering mechanics.
Branches of Engineering
Mechanics

● Engineering mechanics consists of three

main branches:
● 1. Mechanics of rigid bodies
● 2. Mechanics of deformable bodies
● 3. Mechanics of fluids
● In this presentation, we will focus on the
mechanics of rigid bodies.
What is a Rigid Body?

● A rigid body is one where the distance

between any two points remains constant,
regardless of external forces.
● This means it cannot be deformed by any
means.
● Examples include diamond and carbon
nanotubes.
Real-Life Materials
● In reality, all materials can be deformed to some extent.
● Physical bodies deform slightly under the action of loads.
● Calling a body rigid means the changes in dimensions are small
enough to be neglected.
Importance of Rigid Body
Approximation

● Idealizing a body as rigid simplifies

dynamics calculations.
● It helps in finding the trajectory of a body
by tracking a point, usually the center of
mass.
● This approximation is well understood and
solves many complex problems with ease.
Mechanics of Rigid
Bodies
● The mechanics of rigid bodies is divided
into two groups:
● 1. Statics: When bodies remain static
under applied forces.
● 2. Dynamics: When bodies move under
applied forces.
● Both are crucial for understanding the
behavior of structures and machines.
Statics: Understanding Rest
● Statics deals with bodies that are at rest.
● It helps us understand how forces balance each other to keep
structures stable.
● Examples include bridges and buildings that must remain
stationary.
Dynamics: Understanding
Motion

● Dynamics deals with bodies in motion.

● It helps us understand how forces cause
movement and change in velocity.
● Examples include cars, airplanes, and
machinery in motion.
Probing Question: Why is
Friction Important?

● Think about how friction affects your daily

life.
● Why is friction important when driving a
car or riding a bike?
● How does understanding friction help
engineers design safer vehicles?
Conclusion: The Power of Mechanics
● Engineering mechanics is a powerful tool for understanding and
designing the world around us.
● By studying mechanics, we can create safer, more efficient, and
innovative solutions.
● Keep asking questions and exploring the wonders of engineering!
