Programming
• Radio is a vital tool to reach a wide audience. Radio
programming is the process of selecting and scheduling
content for broadcasting stations.
• Radio Programming means designing long- or short-form
production narrative of a Radio series, Radio mini-series or
specially intended for commercial broadcast
• (Narrative is a spoken or written account of connected
events, a story, or a description of a series of events. A
narrative is a story).
• Scheduling programming ahead of time also enables you to
optimize your sound quality using audio processing. Audio
processing creates a consistent and polished sound for your
station's broadcasts. Audio processing aims to create a high-
quality listening experience for the audience and make your
broadcasts stand out from competitors.
• You can streamline the process of scheduling content with a
Programming Strategy
All networks and Channels need to fill their airtime with
programming. The programming executives must figure out what new
Programs to develop, what new shows to greenlight, and which
programs to keep or cancel. Overall, they must develop a
programming strategy and plan for implementation.

Programming is divided into two major areas: development and


scheduling. Development involves choosing promising program ideas.
Scheduling involves planning a programming lineup to maximize
listenership.

The title sequence of a Radio Program sets the tone for the entire
series. Whether a few iconic seconds or a complicated two-minute
scene, a show’s intro tells audiences what they’re in for.

For different programs, the planning is different so a producer should


manage likewise so that the production process may not suffer. There
are two kinds of productions technically both require different
prerequisites in the pre-production phase.

• Radio sound effects are known as radio imaging. Your radio imaging selection helps
distinguish the sound of your station. Widespread imaging effects include:

• Voiceovers: recordings made by professional voice artists

• Intros: standardized scripts introducing segments
• Music beds: instrumental soundtracks which serve as background noise, "cradling" a

Since Radio programming is strategic, network executives determine a programming strategy
by considering the following factors:
A scheduling strategy, including the day and time a show should air, the line-up on a
particular day (the order of shows), and a programming block
Target audience demographics for the programming
Audience flow, keeping the audience tuned in from one show to the next
Advertiser appeal
Promotions for the program
Production costs of a program

Cost to purchase rights to particular programs

PROGRAMME PLANNING
The planning of a program in pre-production is very important to avoid any unpleasant
situation and untoward event as sometimes unforeseen problems may occur so the better the
planning, the greater the quality. Every radio station has a planning section or department to
facilitate the producers. Each producer before the program meets the planning officer to
discuss the requirements for the production.

A Current Affairs program is a
journalistic radio and television program
genre featuring detailed analysis and
discussion of current news stories.
Current affairs is a genre of broadcast
journalism in which major news stories are
discussed at length on time. This differs
from regular news broadcasts that
emphasize news reports presented for
simple presentation as soon as possible,
often with a minimum of analysis.
In Radio Pakistan, the bulletins
include National‚ Regional‚ External‚ Local/
City‚ Sports‚ Business and Weather
Reports besides those headline bulletins
TALK SHOWS, FORUMS AND
DISCUSSION PROGRAMMES
• For these types of programs a good vocabulary of descriptive words, particularly action
verbs, adverbs, and nouns is essential. The impromptu speaker must have a good
background. For he or she is not forgiven for mistakes in grammar, pronunciation
accent, or language.
• The speaker in any instance is required to have excellent power of observation, to be
able to see ahead while he is talking about something that he or she has previously
observed.
• In too many instances the journalist is inclined to "hem or haw" while he or she is
groping and searching for a word that he or she feels will convey the correct impression
to the Listeners.
• In such unprepared programs there must be no dead air or silence, although brief
pauses undoubtedly will make the material sound more conversational.
• These pauses will be shorter than they would be if the anchor or the host were
conversing with an audience. Quickness and expression are equally vital.
Basic techniques to be followed in
talk shows: Interviews
• Interviewer will introduce the guest and ask questions which will also tend to introduce him.
• · Ask some rather light questions that may start the program with a spurt of humor, for this
puts the interviewee at ease and pleases the viewers.
• · There must be no pauses of any length, consequently, the person who is doing the
interviewing must be alert to discover the leads in the answers he receives.
• · The first few minutes will be devoted to less serious discussion to brighten the subject and
to encourage the interviewee to articulate comfortably.
• · There is a tendency to allow the interview to become argumentative but this should not be
avoided because it makes the interviewer express his ideas, which are not of importance.
• · The interviewer must remember that he is not interviewing himself. His job is to ask
stimulating questions, not to supply the answers; to bring out the interviewee's personality
not his own.
• · Do not try to influence the guest by leading questions. The person who is important
enough to be interviewed must have something interesting enough to appeal to the listeners.
