Paper tickets required in 2026???

The idea that in 2026 Rail Europe requires paper printed tickets/boarding passes is absurd. Tickets should be able to be presented via electronic mobile device, this is more convenient for the customer and more environmentally friendly for everyone.

Hello Adam,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

We completely understand your point - digital tickets are certainly more convenient and environmentally friendly, and we agree that this is the preferred option whenever possible.

That said, the requirement to present a printed ticket is set directly by the individual rail operator, not by Rail Europe. As a distributor for European railroads, we issue tickets according to the rules and formats defined by each operator.

Many operators do accept mobile presentation, even in some cases where the ticket is issued as “print-at-home.” To help clarify this, we’ve created a dedicated guide outlining which operators allow mobile ticket presentation. Link to our guide is below for reference:

https://help.raileurope.com/article/41698-how-to-use-print-at-home-train-tickets

We truly appreciate your feedback, and we hope this helps clarify why the requirement exists in certain cases.

As a first time user it was not user friendly to use the rail experience. It was confusing at times especially the train from Zurich HB to Goschenen. The ticket listed train IR2421 and the associate at the rail station office in the airport said look for train IR2421. However, the App listed IR46 but was hard to see that it actually went to Goschenen. We had to ask other people waiting at the platform. As a first time user it was hard to figure out the platforms and how to get to the next platform. The rates are very high for a train especially short train rides.

Hello Mark,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re sorry to hear that it was not as smooth as you had expected.

As a distributor, we provide a platform to search and book European train tickets, but we do not control the operational information shared at stations, including platform assignments, signage or announcements. Train numbers, service designations and how they are displayed at the station are managed directly by the rail carrier. We understand how this can be confusing, particularly when different references are shown, and we appreciate you highlighting this. We will certainly pass your feedback along to the relevant carrier for their consideration.

Regarding platform navigation and station layout, these are also managed by the local railway authorities and station operators, and unfortunately are outside of our control.

As for pricing, the fares displayed on our website are provided directly by the rail carriers. We do not set or modify the base ticket prices. These fares are dynamic and may vary depending on seat availability, travel demand, route and the carrier’s own pricing policies.

That said, we truly value your feedback, as it helps us understand where the experience can feel challenging for travelers. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts.

It was pretty easy for me to purchase tickets to travel online. My recommendation would be to find a way to make the tickets more easily used via our mobile phones or devices vs paper. Saying that, one has to give them big kudos for being aware of this, quick response to issues, great customer service and amazing trains.

Hello Mark,

Thank you for your feedback and we completely agree with you. In today’s digital age, mobile tickets are a much more practical and user-friendly option, especially for travelers who are constantly on the move and may not have access to a printer.

At Rail Europe, we are strong advocates of mobile ticketing, not just for convenience but also as part of our ongoing go green initiative. By supporting eco-friendly practices, we aim to reduce paper waste wherever possible and encourage digital alternatives.

That said, the rail carriers decide on the available ticket delivery methods, and as distributors, we have no influence over their choices. We currently provide four different ticket delivery methods including mobile tickets, depending on what each rail operator makes available to us. You can learn more about these options here:

https://help.raileurope.com/article/41269-ticket-delivery-options

In your case, the rail operator is Deutsche Bahn, and unfortunately, they currently only support print-at-home PDF tickets for the route you booked. We understand this isn’t ideal, especially when mobile ticketing is becoming the standard in many other countries and with other carriers.

Rest assured, we're constantly advocating for broader adoption of mobile tickets and working with our rail partners to improve flexibility and convenience for our customers. Your feedback is incredibly valuable and helps reinforce the need for these improvements across the industry.

Hello Patricia,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re sorry to hear that the trip protection didn’t work out the way you expected.

We’d like to clarify how the “Cancel For Any Reason” (CFAR) protection works. CFAR is an optional service offered at the time of booking, and it is managed independently by our partner, Koala. Claims and refunds under this protection are not processed directly on the Rail Europe website like regular ticket refunds. Instead, there is a separate process that needs to be followed with Koala - where customers need to submit a claim directly to Koala.

All the necessary details on how to submit a CFAR claim, and the claim link – including conditions and steps – are provided in the Trip Protection Guide that is sent with your booking confirmation. Once a claim is submitted, Koala handles it directly and communicates with the customer throughout the process.

We understand this may not have been clear at the time. To help, here is our dedicated guide explaining everything about CFAR and how to make a claim:
https://help.raileurope.com/article/43750-rail-europe-trip-protection

If you still need assistance or have any questions, we’re always happy to help. To reach out to our customer support team, simply select the “Help” option at the top of our homepage, then choose the “Rail Europe Support” tool at the bottom right to access our Chatbot. From there, you can click on the “Contact Us” tab directly, or if you’re already in a conversation, click the three dots on the top left corner and select “Contact us.”

Hello Eleanor,

Thank you for your great review and for sharing your experience with us. We’re really happy to hear that you found the booking process easy and straightforward – that’s exactly what we aim for. It’s completely understandable to have questions about train types and routes, and we’re glad our platform helped you complete your booking smoothly.

Regarding the train service itself, we’re glad you mentioned this. As Rail Europe, we provide the booking platform and ticketing service, while the trains and onboard experience are managed directly by the rail carriers. This means the type of train, comfort level, and onboard facilities are determined by the operator rather than by us.
