WARNING- Double charging for Full Tank of Fuel

WARNING- On booking your car you will have been charged a fee of E58 to cover the cost of returning the car with a full tank of fuel.
HOWEVER, when you collect your car you are told that you MUST return the car with a full tank, and also upon return. THAT is double accounting. You have bought the fuel in the agreement, and now they are ALSO asking you to top up.

ENSURE you double check the invoice/contract they give you when you collect the car and raise it then.

I have been raising with Maggori over the past 3 months, and they have confirmed but have gone quiet now that I ask for a refund and that they correct this in their systems. I have now raised with the tradings standards in Italy and the UK-ECC

Very poor experience with Maggiore

Booked via Rentalcars with Full Protection insurance, but at the Maggiore desk they tried to sell me extra insurance, claiming the one I had purchased did not apply to them. Very confusing and unpleasant.
The car (Renault Captur, “Ford Puma or similar”) was heavily used (~110,000 km), without winter tyres despite being mandatory, and suffered a mechanical fault during the trip, severely limiting power for around 2 hours.
Despite returning the car with a full tank, I was charged €12 for supposed 2 litres. Rentalcars should exercise better control over their partners.

This company is a fraud

We have rent a car from this company twice. First time we rent last year for a day went everything ok but this year we rent for a day from Venice airport to visit lake Garda and Verona. Not even 2 hours have passed and the car runs out of battery. We try calling bit nobody answered. After about 1,5 hours car support arrives fixed the problem and told us not to turn it off for about an hour and we should be ok. So we went from Garda to Verona driving and the car went out of battery twice the same day in the middle of the highway. Long story short the company didn't answer a single phone call and when we went back to our homes after all this trouble we send emails explaining what happened in full details asking for our moneys back (since this was a mechanical problem and we didn't had the chance to use their car for this day we rented) only for them to answer back that they are not giving our money back (it was clearly in the contract that they had to refund us). We almost got hit by a track while the battery went off in the middle of the highway (with just 2-2,5 hours driving) and these guys literally told us that we should have paid for the car support we called. Don't rent from then it's a complete fraud.

Poor service from Maggiore

The Seat Arona car we were given by Maggiore Rent a Car at Brindisi Airport in September 2025 was a major disappointment. The car was in poor condition and clearly had not been serviced to a basic level.
1. Carpet in foot well was threadbare and soiled
2. Internal seat coverings stained and soiled.
3. Suspension appeared to be damaged on the RHS, particularly.
4. On our 4th day driving the warning light came on for oil while we were on a motorway. With the car in danger of overheating we had to stop at the nearest garage and put in oil before continuing on with our journey.
5. The windscreen wipers were at "end of life" which was a particular issue considering the wet and windy weather.
6. On the last day, a warning light came on indicating that the tyres were deflated.

When we returned the car at Brindisi Airport the Maggiore Rep no 1 at the car park noticed 3 small marks on the passenger front door. My wife easily rubbed off what were effectively chalk marks and it was accepted by the Rep no 1 there was no issue.
He advised us to present our receipt for oil to his colleague in the airport for off setting against the bill.
We did as were advised and presented the receipt at the counter and to get sign off of release of the €200 deposit we had paid.
After a prolonged wait at the counter while Maggiore Rep no 2 was on the phone to Rep no 1 we were presented on a screen with a bill for damage to the car. We were advised that Rep no 1 had discovered further marks after we had left the car back.( This is a new one on me, but when the car is dropped back remotely to the office, it is a risk)
We were very angry at this outrageous claim and robustly and loudly let Rep no 2 know that we did not accept it. We requested a photo of the damage so we could check against the video that we had taken on return of the car to Rep no 1.
The photo never materialised and their claim was dropped after our heated rejection of their claim.
This was extremely sharp practice by the Maggiore Reps to try to extract money from us for a spurious claim of non existent damage in a situation where we were due to board a flight !
We would strongly recommend that potential customers think carefully about hiring cars from Maggiore even if the cost might seem to be attractive. We were just lucky that this poorly serviced car did not lead to an accident on Italian roads with poor surface quality in certain areas and plenty of aggressive driving.

Extremely Poor Customer Service

Extremely Poor Customer Service – Still Waiting for Refund After 5 Months

I had an absolutely terrible experience with Maggiore in Italy. I originally booked a car in July, then cancelled that booking and rebooked a different one with the same company. Five months later, I am STILL waiting for my original refund.
I have called five times, and every time they tried to appease me, saying the refund was on its way and all I needed to do was wait for it to appear on my card. I also wrote several emails, and the response was always the same: “Don’t worry.” On my last call, they even admitted they were having technical issues processing refunds and that everything had to be done manually, yet nothing has happened.
Five months and still no refund? What kind of company is this? Maggiore is part of Avis Budget Group, one of the largest rental companies worldwide, and yet the process feels completely unprofessional. Even cancelling the original booking was a nightmare, you can’t do it online; you have to call and waste time trying to get through. Totally customer-unfriendly.
Never again!

When I brought back the car to…

When I brought back the car to parketing area it was checked by the responsible employee and cleared. Everythings was fine, then I had to sign on a handheld screen.
When I checked my credit card bill I relaized that the company added Euro 175 for a refill of gazoline although it was 100 % filled up at the latest petrol station before the airport.
This company is criminal and has to be avoided !!

Additional cost: Fuel Up Front Option added to bill

Booked a car 23/10 (1 week) and decided to purchase extra insurance of 25 EUR/day + upgrade of car for 20 EUR/day. Later when I checked my credit card, Maggiore had billed me for: Fuel Up Front Option of 62 EUR. This makes no sense as the car was full of petrol when I returned the car. I have contacted them both on email and called them but no response. I have ticket nr: 89450438. Would appreciate if Maggiore could respond

I would like to share my worst rental experience

I would like to share my dissatisfaction regarding my recent car rental experience, as I believe there were several issues that were not handled properly.

We reserved and paid for a vehicle in a higher segment (Volkswagen T-Roc), but were given a lower-segment vehicle instead. We raised this concern at the time, but it was not accepted. I understand that the exact same model might not always be available; however, providing a lower-segment car for the same price is not acceptable. For clarity, the Volkswagen T-Roc is a C-segment vehicle, while the Citroën C3 is categorized as a B-segment vehicle, meaning they are not equivalent.

Our reservation was specifically for a diesel vehicle. During pickup, we were informed that the car was diesel, but upon receiving it in the parking area, we discovered that it was actually petrol. This affected our travel planning and resulted in higher fuel expenses.

When we asked to add an additional driver, the fee requested was extremely high.

We also requested additional insurance, but the cost was even higher than the rental fee itself, so we decided not to proceed.

Unfortunately, this rental experience made us feel misled, and certainly did not meet our expectations.

I am sharing this feedback with the hope that you will address it seriously and provide a satisfactory explanation or solution. Otherwise, I will consider sharing my experience on other public platforms as well.

No refund after breakdown

Hire car broke down. Although the company replaced it, we had to take a taxi to the airport to pick it up, which cost 120 euros. They promised to refund this a month ago but we are still waiting and customer services does not reply to messages.

Scam and lies

Scam and lies. We rented a car where the air condition was broken, though this was the first thing we asked about when making the rental agreement. We called the emergency number provided which was a dead end number. Upon returning the car, the staff were horrified and the station manager promised us that they had initiated a partial refund and that they would recommend a full refund, but that needed to be approved by head office. We have yet to receive any money back, over a month later, and their customer service are ignoring our emails. I expected more from a branch of Avis.

We have just had a 2 week car hire and had a lovely fiat 500, was great service and nice car … very pleasant service and car. Read lots of negative reviews which we felt a bit concerned about. But did the usual video and pics of the car to cover ourselves and it was all fine. Would definitely recommend this company. Was just as good as the expensive car
hire companies!
Thanks ☺️

Chasing refund for three months

Rented a car from them then cancelled three weeks before as my plans changed. No issues cancelling but I’ve been chasing them for refund since mid July. On the phone they say a senior manager needs to approve it and that it’ll happen any moment now bit nothing happens. I’ve now racked up £100 in credit card charges waiting for refund. Suggest you avoid them in the future.

Horrendous bunch of thieves…

Horrendous bunch of thieves. DO NOT USE. We had a tiny dent, less than 1cm with no scratch of paint. According to their terms, this should be wear and tear and not subject to a charge. However they charged us the maximum they could, 330 euro. AND they took the charge TWICE, so a total of 660 euros. They refuse to refund the money and we are going to have to take them to court.

Save the pain and look else where!

Initial Experience
The initial car pickup process was straightforward with no issues.
The Incident
Unfortunately, I was involved in a collision that damaged the vehicle, though it remained drivable. According to Maggiore's policy, incidents must be reported within 24 hours.

Customer Service Failures
Local Branch Contact Attempts:
I called the pickup branch multiple times over three consecutive days. Each time, staff told me to "call back tomorrow" without providing any assistance or taking a proper incident report.
Central Customer Service:
I also tried calling Maggiore's main customer service line, specifically requesting English-speaking support. However, I was repeatedly connected to representatives who could not communicate in English and hung up on me multiple times.

Return and Billing Issues
Upon returning the vehicle, they inspected the damage and applied a £1,500 excess charge. During the initial payment attempt, they informed me the transaction had failed and promised to email payment details and a receipt.

Fraudulent Charges
After returning to the UK, my credit card company's fraud department contacted me. They revealed that Maggiore had attempted to charge my card over 20 times, with two successful transactions of £1,500 each - meaning I was charged twice for the same excess.
Despite multiple requests, I have still not received any payment receipts, which I need for my excess insurance claim.

Verdict
AVOID THIS COMPANY. The combination of poor customer service, communication barriers, and what appears to be fraudulent billing practices makes Maggiore unsuitable for UK travelers. I question how any UK-based car hire broker can recommend a company that appears to regularly overcharge British customers.

Key Issues:
Inadequate incident reporting process
Language barriers with customer service
Duplicate charging (£3,000 instead of £1,500)
No payment documentation provided
Possible fraudulent billing practices

We rented a car from Maggiore from Roma to Roma

We rented a car from Maggiore from Rome to Rome We returned the car without a single scratch or scuff with the gas tank full. Without informing us or sending us an invoice, Maggiore charged our credit card about 1400 euros for scratch damage and an empty gas tank. It is impossible to assert our rights, this company is cheating. As proof, they send us the photos of the car they took 5 days later. Avoid renting a car from Maggiore at all costs!!

€1,347 STOLEN - Forged Signatures - CRIMINAL FRAUD

I rented two cars from Maggiore Italy (April-June 2025) and was systematically defrauded of €1,347 through double-billing and FORGED SIGNATURES on documents I never signed.

CONTRACTS: 140453353 & 137317983

THE SCAM:
- Prepaid €1,217 for first rental - they charged €2,233.33 instead
- Charged TWICE for: one-way fee (€70), airport surcharge (€305), insurance (€289.95)
- Fake "upgrade" fee of €150 - received the exact car class I booked
- They FORGED MY SIGNATURE on billing documents

Total stolen: €1,347 from agreed €2,032 = charged €3,379

Management (Rita Rossi, Anna Kuliga, James Adams, Gianluca Testa) ignored all complaints.

CRIMINAL CHARGES FILED:
✓ ECC-Net complaint submitted
✓ Italian police report for forgery
✓ Bank chargeback initiated

WARNING: This is not incompetence - it's organized fraud. They forge signatures. They steal money. Avoid at all costs.

Avoid Maggiore, They Will Charge You After Return with No Proof

I was charged €939 for a windshield chip with no proof, no review, and no response to my dispute. Maggiore took the money days later – after ignoring all my photos and objections.

This company is a disaster for travelers: they don't inspect properly, ignore evidence, and withdraw money without warning.

Maggiore is not a rental company – it's a trap. Avoid at all costs.
