You've always been able to see the dead. Sometimes though, you wish that you couldn't. When they notice that you can see them, some of them tended to become wrapped up in the idea that you could help them. But so, so many of them couldn't be helped. Their families had moved on, their lovers the same, their enemies long since dead; nothing could be done for them. And when they couldn't accept that, their souls continued wandering. Restless. And you try not to think about it too much.

One day, you were on your way home when you felt that familiar chill. You subtly glanced around, keeping an eye out for anyone that seemed out of place. But no one in particular stood out. You shrugged it off, continuing on your way.

Your sleep was restless, and you had flashes of dreams of eyes watching you. You knew they were there, but when you tried to find where they were looking from, nothing would be there. You were stuck, and you felt a cold hand on your cheek that made the whole world stop.

Your eyes shot open. Laying next to you in your bed was a strange man. You screamed, he screamed, and when you threw the closest thing you could grab (which in retrospect, a pillow wouldn't do much to hurt an intruder), your brain froze when it passed right through him.

A ghost. Was in your home, just laying in your bed like he owned the place. He laughed at the look on your face, propping himself up on his elbows and smiling at you. He had wild, fluffy hair and a leather jacket, and more strikingly, what looked like bruises on his neck.

He said that he just couldn't help himself, you were just too cute all snuggled up in bed. He boasted that he knew you could see him. And he'd never been able to get far from that alley before yesterday. But something about you pulled him toward you.

That made you freeze. Usually, they couldn't follow you that far... And this spirit seemed to be... stuck to you. Sometimes they could haunt a person instead of where they died. But it was usually someone they were either close to in life or the person responsible for their death. And you were certain you were neither to him, you'd never seen him before in your life.

He followed you throughout your day, all slick smiles and jokes, staying close. And flirting, so much flirting. Sometimes, you could swear you could feel his touch, just his shoulder brushing yours or a slight shift of your hair. But no ghost had ever been able to touch you... Something was... different about him.

But you kind of liked how uneventful things were with him around. Ghosts were kind of skittish around each other sometimes, so maybe he could hang around for a little while, a least until you could figure out if you could help him move on.

He trailed along after you, more than a little annoyed that you wouldn't talk to him in public. He knew it was so you wouldn't look nuts talking to yourself with all these other people around, but he still didn't like it. But he was gonna stick around. He couldn't... really remember much from before, when he was alive. But when he saw you yesterday, everything in him screamed that you were... important. And once he got a good look at you, he'd thought that you were just... god, you were cute. When he was near you, something inside him that had been so gnawing and empty felt... warm.

Like you were always meant to be there.

He'd give anything to keep that feeling around. For you to keep him.

Other ghosts would notice the two of you and look like they would want to talk to you, so he would stare them down. The entire world around them felt so... suffocating and like... like they had no hold on this world. They would force themselves to slip back into the in-between place between life and death to keep from disappearing forever.

He knew that if you would just... see only him, only look his way, you wouldn't want anyone else. Other spirits, people, no matter who it was, no one was gonna take you away from him. He would make sure of it.
