Best News of Last Year - 2025 Edition

Let’s be real: if you looked at the headlines last year, it probably felt like the world was on fire 90% of the time. It’s easy to get stuck in the doomscroll and forget that actual, genuine progress is happening every single day. I know the news cycle can be exhausting, so I did the heavy lifting for you

Mocking people when they say "pardon?", "what?" etc or replying with "nothing!", especially if they laugh about it.

Had a friend who used to say "rucham" (I'm fucking) whenever I said "słucham" (pardon). He only stopped when I explained that every time he does that and doesn't repeat what he said I genuinely want to cry. I have APD with about 45% word comprehension, which he knew about, so when the fact that I'm isolated because 55% of what people say is lost on me is turned into a joke I'm hurt, not amused. It's not every now and then to me, like it is to them. I misshear all the time. I'm glad he stopped, but it's frustrating I had to even explain why I want him to stop.

Servant: Your highness, a party of adventurers has answered your call for help.

King: Excellent. What are they like?

Servant: One of them is a dragon-lady.

King: Interesting. Those are rare around these parts.

Servant: Another is a goblin paladin.

King: Not a role you usually see goblins in.

Servant: A third is a purple-skinned tiefling.

King: I didn't even know they come in that color.

Servant: The last one is a sapient gelatinous cube.

King: What. How did these four even meet?

Servant: They met in a tavern two hours ago, apparently.

Queen: My love, please return to bed.

King: *pacing* Why would a gelatinous cube come to a tavern? Can it even get drunk? How did it fit through the doors?

All-cubes party

Hypothesis debunked.

I'm not even disappointed about being wrong, I love that it's kinda evenly balanced?

(The Dragon-lady got my vote too lmao, shouldn't have underestimated the amount of lesbians and strong-woman-kinners on this site)

Audism is people using those "spooky fonts" (which usually is symbols and languages mixed together making subtitles unreadable for people and audio descriptions [so this also affects blind people too]) in sub titles.

In 2024 I noticed this on the subtitles of a indie studios series dub in my native language. I posted it online, pointing it out and asking if anyone knew how to get in contact with the studio or the localization team.

I proceeded to be harassed, called slurs and more over this. Eventually the person on the localization team who was responsible found out about it, and had a civilized calm conversation with me (strong contrast to everyone else).

They claimed they'll try to reduce it in the future but still want to stylize their subtitles - which i assumed referred to commentary they made in it (which also feels iffy. it's still misuse) - and that they didn't realize it "can be used" for accessibility (when that's literally what it's for?)

Later I watched the newer episodes. It's still a problem. Despite them claiming to listen, learn and understand, and Despite them claiming to improve it going forward, they still used those unreadable "stylistic choices".

it's frustrating, but I'm not willing to risk getting harassed again. So I kept my mouth quiet in public. I do still wish people didn't misuse subtitles like that; it's difficult for deaf & hoh people, blind people, and even non-disabled people (or differently but not blind/deaf) who are trying to improve their language skills in a second language and want to read a word they didn't audible recognize :(

(This is to say, if anyone reading this knows what series and dub I'm talking about, please don't harass the studio, as their dubs are largely made by fans whose fan-dubs got popular and were made official. Also don't harass the localization team, harassment isn't going to make things better. Likely even worse, actually)

Guy in red is an artist ai guy is not

I just want to point out that the guy ate a bunch of images, chewed them out, and spat out an unrecognizable slop - literally what ai models do.

This is poetry to me and whatever the goal of original art piece was it is now elevated to heavens.

Why is it that out of the 22 paperback and hardcover versions of The Blue Castle on Amazon, 15 of them are "Independently published" aka public domain scams and the rest are publishers I've never heard of?

Any one know if these publishers are reputable?

  • ‎Tundra Books
  • Warbler Classics
  • Plumleaf Press
  • Nimbus Publishing Limited
  • SeaWolf Press
  • Wordsworth Publishing House
  • Page Classics

[Image descriptions: three covers for The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. The first one is dark blue with a cabin in the woods at night with glowing orange light in the windows. The second has illustrations of green leaves and flowers and two small blue castles. The third has a very faint castle in the distance and the dark silhouette of a girl standing amongst many blue flowers. End Image Description]

Hi. I need folks that are obsessed with the napoleonic era british navy to rant at me about children on ships. What tasks were young boys assigned onboard? Why were they there? Were they tasked with beating drums or blowing signals on horns like in the army?

Obligatory Master and Commander still:

(See? He’s too small to have a job at sea! Who put him to sea?)

OP, you need to read Midshipmen and Quarterdeck Boys in the British Navy, 1771-1831 by Samantha A. Cavell!

Cavell's 2006 MA thesis, "Playing at command: midshipmen and quarterdeck boys in the Royal Navy, 1793-1815" is also a great read (Google Drive link).

I also recommend Educating the Royal Navy: Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Education for Officers by H. W. Dickinson, Nelson's Navy: The Ships, Men and Organisation, 1793-1815 by Brian Lavery, and Life in Nelson's Navy by Dudley Pope.

Snotty: The Story of the Midshipman by Geoffrey Penn is on Internet Archive!
