actually funny that stebbins calls art a hick. baton rouge isn't exactly backwater; art's just poor and has a heavier accent than some of the other boys. stebbins, brother, you also live in poverty dystopia hellscape land and you are also from the south. friendly fire, brother. friendly fire.

#billy stebbins#art baker#riko.txt#on a more serious note there's something to be said re: privilege + race + conformity + perceptions of masculinity#stebbins' accent comes out swinging the more he deteriorates. his clothes are a little better than the other boys'.#rabbit cosplaying as a hare etc etc#art wears his heart on his sleeve. what you see is exactly what you get. art tends to be kind of a realist despite his optimism/gentleness#i think you could make the argument that to a degree stebbins recognizes himself in baker and how they're not quite mirrors of one another#because they've made similar observations but come to different conclusions#but art hoping to make friends and stebbins' cut 'i wasn't lonely then'.....yeah.#the walls only come down when stebbins realizes he's out of options. art's known from the beginning he only has a chance. not a guarantee#stebbins ISN'T better than art. i think he knows that. but he won't look it in the face#that pride that comes from being what he is (rather than who he is) keeps him isolated for quite a while#art knows he's fucked. art's grief for himself settles over him more softly. 'i'm going home' vs 'fucking do me'#it's 2am and i'm so tired with minimal coherence but i think they're neat.

@fluttervee EXTREMELY correct take on all counts. pete is absolutely losing it too. like he isnt okay. fighting with ray is the worst worst worst. to me i see him turning a lot more inward, though, like getting real spooky quiet (which makes ray even MORE freaked out! YAY!)
