Crying bc the events of Pacific's Rim are literally happening right now. January 8, 2025, was the day Mako and Raleigh fought those kaijus in the Hong Kong double event. January 12 is the triple event where they close the breach. In two days we cancel the apocalypse.

Hi I have a question about Pacific Rim. Given that the sparring is just A way to test for drift compatibility and any activity that requires people to collaborate and anticipate each others moves works, including stuff like multi player video games

  • Can you test for drift compatibility via improv comedy

They are piloting a Jaeger together in my imagination

I loved when “Drift Compatible” entered pop lexicon cause we were in DESPERATE need for a way to platonically express “one of us to the other is as a limb to a body; we are a left and right feet of a dancer; we do not need to speak because any one word inspires an exchange of unspoken words that conveys a full conversation in which a mutual conclusion is determined in an instant”. Huge win for the QPRs out here

I also really love that the movie explicitly shows that drift compatibility can be any form of relationship. Two brothers, three brothers, husband and wife, father and son, two friends who have lost everything to the same enemy. It isn’t about the way you connect, it’s about the connection itself. And of course, that connection lets you put boots to asses and kill alien monsters together. Because the power of human connection can change the world or something.

pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering

pacific rim commentary

i took a few notes from guillermo del toro’s commentary on pacific rim:

  • gypsy danger was designed to look like a machine from ww2 and to have the gait of a “gunslinger”
  • he talks a lot about how in movies “form is content” and that he designs not for “eye candy, but for eye protein”; narrative is submerged in the audiovisual details and the details are everywhere in pacific rim
  • he is constantly juxtaposing massive elements w small details for scale; like a giant battle and a little red shoe, to contribute to the sense of “awe and majesty”
  • the movie deals w types “the pilot…the scientist” so the characters had to be textured w minimal gestures; mako and raleigh (two of the main characters) have some of the fewest lines in the film
  • ww2 aesthetics; bomb refuge, overalls, working for rations were all incorporated
  • not a movie about one hero but a composite of humanity; the world saving the world; a movie about togetherness, connecting, and trust
  • Mako is coded blue bc of her origins in the kaiju; blue stains her heart and her hair
  • every character has to learn to trust all the others
  • all the characters get a Hero Moment
  • re: the fighting stick scene; “if this was a 19th century movie they would be dancing the waltz”
  • the little red shoe is the absolute heart of the movie
  • quiet power is still power; mako as a strong character w quiet determination
  • the Russian jaeger team are so hard-core they have no escape pod
  • some of the Battle of Hong Kong was done in miniatures and models not just cgi
  • “This film is the most controlled joyful exercise in image creation of my life”
  • one of guillermo’s fave moments is when newt and hermann drift
  • “No one carries the suit like idris elba”
  • “No matter how many times you drift with someone you still have to say I love you”
  • structured the three fights for raleigh as; losing a partner; gaining a partner; saving a partner (”it won’t happen to [him] again”)
  • it was important to guillermo that the humans saved the world, not machines or ballistic power; humanity.

Is there a name for the phase in every fandom where we put them in a Pacific Rim AU?

Anyway, Pacific Rims your Jayvik! >:) Their Jaeger is called "Hammer Time"

Ohh I love Pacific Rim AUs! Just, like, considering: Jayce starts out as a jaeger pilot, co-piloting with his dad, but they get wrecked by a kaiju off the coast of Freijord and his dad dies. So they try to re-match Jayce with a bunch of other people. He's friendly and charismatic, it should be easy to find someone else drift compatible, right? No. Fail after fail after fail. They don't wash him out of the program because he was a great pilot and ffs they will find someone else drift compatible for him eventually and in the meantime he gets transferred to the Zaun Shatterdome for more failed compatibility tests (they are scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point, although Vi ends up the closest Jayce has gotten yet) and he kind of wanders over to the science labs because Jayce always loved science and he's heard rumors about the mysterious and brilliant head scientist Viktor. Meet-cute: Jayce is staring at a giant kaiju eyeball suspended in formaldehyde and he looks up and there is the most beautiful man he's ever seen who wants to know wtf he is doing in his lab. So Jayce and Viktor become science partners and build the newest, best jaeger and Jayce knows, he just knows in his bones, that they're drift compatible and they should be the ones to pilot it, but he doesn't say anything until there's an attack and the only Zaun pilot team--Vander and Silco--get wrecked and a kaiju is like twenty minutes away from destroying the city. Jayce and Viktor get in the new jaeger and yes, drift compatible, perfect, and they go kick the kaiju's ass. And then they kiss, yay. (They eventually get transferred to the Piltover Shatterdome because politics and Ekko and Jinx take over at the Zaun Shatterdome with their scrappy, painted jaeger.)

Honestly I miss the energy Tumblr had when the first Pacfic Rim movie came out. Everybody was talking about who they were drift compatible with and that was like a huge compliment. Ppl were drawing Kaijus, and Jaegers, naming ‘em. It was a better time

The image won’t load but god I hope it’s Robopope, The Robot Pope.

“I think Pacific Rim is unrealistic now because instead of everyone banding together to defeat COVID, the governments just gave up and abandoned everybody-”

Are you kidding me? Pacific Rim 100% predicted this kind of thing. That’s literally what the Pacific Perimeter Program was about. Once the PPDC decided fighting kaiju was too expensive, they just gave up and chose to ignore the problem by putting it behind a big wall. Pacific Rim is literally about the people who were abandoned by the institutions that were supposed to protect them and kept on trying anyway.

what’s funniest about the pacific rim scientists is like. when newt geiszler says he’s a scientist he means an old-timey 1910s entomologist wearing khaki shorts and a comically oversized pair of binoculars traipsing through the jungle capturing endangered species of butterfly and murmuring “egads!! fascinating…..” and scribbling it in his journal. when hermann gottlieb is being a scientist it’s literally the fucking manhattan project. tortured chainsmoking physicist. pawn of a war. repressed homosexual all his life. gets executed for being a communist. And they have to do each other’s peer review
