Back in May, I was working on a s1 Sheriff Grimes custom when the pictures from filming of 9x01 derailed my life 😂 So here’s my favorite babes, finally finished.

A Richonne Ranking: 40 Moments [4] Taking Root – 30 Days Without an Incident, 4x01

The context I wasn’t able to include in this set is the series of scenes that precede this. All of the romantic pairings are introduced or reintroduced in turn: Glenn and Maggie, Tyreese and Karen, Beth and Whatshisface, Sasha and Bob. Then we cut to Hershel delivering a speech to Rick supposedly about plants – “Things break but they can still grow. These little bristles, they’ll take root and we’ll have a whole new plant.” – before Rick’s attention is suddenly caught by the whistle signifying Michonne’s return. Boy, does he move fast. It’s a sequence loaded with implications.

We then revisit the Rick, Carl and Michonne dynamic to see that the tension and melancholy that permeates Clear has been replaced by something more relaxed, open and overtly familial. As she gives Carl a stack of comics and Rick a razor, it’s clear that wherever her pursuit of retribution takes her, those Grimes boys are never far from her thoughts. They are what keep her sane, as we learn more explicitly later in the season.

Rick, meanwhile, looks at Michonne like she hung the fucking moon. Having run over with all the urgency of a Labrador puppy, he can’t pull off any degree of nonchalance. When Daryl joins them and says, “Glad to see you’re in one piece,” he’s talking to Michonne but looking at Rick. It gives something away. Daryl’s onto Rick already. And the expression on Rick’s face as he looks from Daryl to Michonne is like, “Shit, did she pick up on that?” Then, as Michonne elects to go off again immediately, Carl seems to voice Rick’s feelings when he says, “But you just got here!” His dad stays silent, just watching her walk away. That’s when Daryl gives his buddy a lil supportive pat. Folks, this is not subtle stuff. P.S. I love this family.

A Richonne Ranking: 40 Moments [7] Checked – Conquer, 5x16

Michonne is, I think we can all agree, the bona fide Grimes Whisperer. Just as Rick ‘fesses up that he and the rest of the Anti-A Team have hatched a secret plan involving guns and a penchant for being really fucking extra, Michonne responds by reiterating her trust in him. He offers her the gun – twice – and she just pushes it back into his hand. She trusts him because she can, because she knows he’ll do the right thing when it comes down to it. Michonne never puts Rick on the defensive, nor is she dismissive of his instincts; she always seeks to understand him, and gives him the space to realize why not listening to her is a bad idea all on his own.

Standing exceptionally close to each other (as is customary), they drop so many iconic Richonne lines that everyone’s fanvid voiceover stockpile just got majorly topped up: “That was for you, not them”, “I was afraid you’d talk me out of it – you could’ve”, “We can find a way”, “I’m still with you”, “Something’s gonna happen, just don’t make something happen”. Ultimately, their bond is reinforced by overcoming the conflict. She’s still with him because she always will be.
