At first he thinks it’s a fluke— it’s gotta be, right? He’d know if the alpha he’d been sharing a room with for months now wasn’t actually an alpha. Except now that he thinks about it, some things are starting to make sense. Like the fact that—until now—he hasn’t caught a hint of Edwin’s scent. Or the abundance of blankets and pillows on his bed that doesn’t not look like a low-key nest. Or that one time he walked in on Edwin changing and was met with a panicked shriek, followed by a really cagey interrogation about whether Charles saw anything. Yeah, okay, maybe this turn of events shouldn’t actually be all that unexpected to Charles after all.
Charles is forced to go off his suppressants and spend his rut with an omega assigned to help him through it. He really was not expecting the omega who greets him, and really doesn’t want to lose control. (Words: 3,429)

"It's not that my friendship with Charles is less than what I want. Or less than what I think I want. You know I would not say this lightly, Niko: I would far sooner go back to Hell than to give up what I have with Charles."
Niko doesn't answer right away.
For a stretch, all Edwin can hear is the low sound of silent speakerphone. He lays back onto his pillow, watching a curl of smoke from his hemp cigarette tickle his bedroom ceiling.
"It's okay to be sad about it being not quite right, even if it is worth going to Hell for," Niko says finally.
Edwin sighs. "I suppose you're right." He closes his smarting eyes, then smiles. "You always are."
