Grant Emerson's superpower is exploding. And as he tells Roy about the abuse he went through as a kid his emotion means he starts heating up for explosion. Okay
Roy tells Lian to hide in the car to be safe and then he tells Grant that if he needs to literally blow up it's okay because the desert will contain him. Okay okay okay. Roy stays close and reaches out and listens even though Grant is a goddamn bomb because Grant needs him.
Lian comes back from the car and asks "is Grant safe now?" which, since she was hiding in the car when Grant told Roy, I take to mean she's asking "is he a safe person to get close to/has the danger passed". And Roy says Grant hasn't ever been safe. Because he means it as "Grant has never been in safety/protected" before. Lian's question is ambiguous but Roy answers immediately because it doesn't even occur to him to see Grant as the danger here, to blame him for his reactions, for being loud and messy and sobbing and literally blowing up -even as Grant himself feels bad for it. Okay

Every time I see some variant of this headline going around I think we also need to address the additional important fact that in the first movie they did together after the whole Beatles incident they wrote in a kiss between their characters and Ridley Scott cut it because it was "too distracting".
