tryna get back to baseline
nnnnever mind i made up another— not sure if it’s consider an idiom ?
“With a gun to their head” (in a hostage way) -> “With blurrypaint to their neck”
and also gunpoint -> smearpoint/seizepoint !
ooooh wait those are really interesting, i love when sayings paint (ha) the bishops as a threat, you just Know the banditos take great joy in slandering them in as many ways as possible.
also makes me think of like: "okay but gun to your head, what would you pick?" -> "okay but nico's hands to your throat, what would you pick?"
the guilt of a failed savior
13 YEARS OF VESSEL!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
i present, my silly self-indulgent picking apart of drag path and the jocals there in. ft color-coded lyrics and my own commentary. i am a drag path jocals truther, and this is my evidence <3
you guys ever think about our first actual view of the Torchbearer. just this lone, imposing figure up on the cliffside staring Blurryface down, chest heaving and eyes shadowed and a target on his chest
its kind of scary its not friendly. he really is this sort of Figure at first. he's just watching, he's not making any moves just yet but he's there and he's witnessing this all happen. he remains after the rest of the banditos retreat.
and it's only revealed to us that this is josh when we get this close up and can see his tattoos. i have to wonder if they rolled up his sleeves on purpose so you could see that it's josh. because he really is. completely anonymous when he's all geared up. he's a faceless entity he's a figure in the background and he's watching. he's waiting. and he's staring blurryface down. He's The Torchbearer BUT WE DONT EVEN KNOW THAT YET ! WE JUST KNOW ITS JOSH !!! we just know that it's josh and because it's josh he's good and he's here to help. him being josh is one of our Only indicators that he's friendly.
NO LIKE PREV @purpleleafsyt EXACTLY. like in NATN before Torch pulls his bandana down Clancy DOES look nervous she looks really wary. The Banditos all but surround her and it's only until the mask comes down does clancy smile and looks relieved and happy to see him. and she has every right to because like. WE know the banditos are here to help but the way they actually sneak into the city in the dead of night and like. flank Clancy and box her in on either side does feel very very threatening. She IS nervous she doesnt know who these people are or if she can trust them yet and i think that was intentional.
its almost like. she is wary of The Torchbearer but she knows she can trust Josh ykwim... I DONT KNOW its so so so interesting in retrospect.
I think perhaps the reason Torch pulling her bandana down contributes to Clancy feeling safer around him and the other Banditos with them is because it's the first time she's seeing people rather than myths whispered around Dema. Because I don't imagine those myths are particularly kind coming from within the city, it's no wonder Clancy was nervous since she has no point of reference for what they're Actually like. Surrounding her isn't really the greatest first face-to-face impression.
But Torch doing that turns it from Clancy comprehending a legend into her seeing and connecting with someone real. Especially with how anonymous they can be with how they all dress similarly and cover their faces. Or somethingggg I also don't know
!!!!!!! YESSSS yes yesyes oh my god this exactly. I think you’re right on thr money ..
tyler actually does a really good job throughout the whole livestream experience of selling the "clancy as a miserable propaganda puppet" thing but. something about this moment, right before ride, where he's clearly trying (and failing) to suppress his smile and you can tell that he's just thrilled to be performing again, even if in a different format than normal, just. charms me.
clancy might be having a damn miserable time right now but tyler is so happy to be back on stage, even for just one show

what about 'kill two bishops with one stone' (two birds one stone)? im still a little new to all of the deep lore with trench and the bandito camp, so i couldnt think of anything to replace stone with. tape maybe? two bishops with one roll of tape? idk it sounds weird lmao
it's actually so funny you bring this one up because just the other day i was writing a scene and went through like, three variations on that phrase while working on it because i too could not come up with a final version i really liked lol.
(i went with the much simpler "two vultures one arrow/stone")
i DO like "two bishops one stone" feels very banditos. "two bishops one torch" maybe? there's something very fun here, i feel like we're just barely missing it.
Jesus Christ -> Bishop's tights
They're probably wearing something under that robe right? Probably tights. Most of the Bishops hate this one. Nova actually thinks it's a great idea
Christ on a cross -> Gone in the graves / Torch in a tower / Bishop in a siezed/gone (I feel like that one has potential with the right phrasing...)
Also sieze in place of damn would make so much sense but I feel like the sound is wrong.
i want you to know that i was taking a sip of water when i opened my inbox and i almost choked at bishop's tights. i just KNOW nico haaaates that, 11/10
okay i LOVE "gone in a grave" for "christ on a cross" that is SO clever, anon, you're so brained, that's getting added to my lexicon immediately
my brain immediately went "damn it all to hell" -> "seize it all to neon" which. i mean. i like it, not sure how comprehensible it actually is as a saying though, lmao
i do sort of feel like seize maybe works better as fuck, though? not as a one-to-one but, i feel like "seize it" and "fuck it" have Very similar vibes
So dema-isms.
Jesus Christ flows so well because of the 2-1 syllables and how you can stress the first and last as much as needed for extra emphasis. Bonus points if the last word has more sharp syllables (t and k sounds) or an i sound I think.
So a couple options could be Glorious Gone, Torch's Light, Vultures flight, etc.
Or I think my personal favorite so far is actually "Bishops Nine". Idk bishop fits really well for the first word, but there may be a better option for the second.
this is a fun case study in how fictional linguistics work, because from like, a language perspective, "glorious gone" makes the most sense and is the most direct "jesus christ" comparison, but in terms of how it sounds, i think "torch's light" is the most satisfying to say, but also feels a little less likely to Be A Thing because profanity almost always has roots in taboo (which is why blasphemy is so common) and it doesn't carry any taboo implications.
i do think "bishops nine" is the beginning of a really good one, though, it just needs a second word with a harder consonant on the end to make it satisfying. i'm, coming up blank on what would work, but, there is something, i'm sure of it.
also my brain is insisting that there is a great "christ on a cross" replacement with bishops, and i'm sure there is, but i absolutely cannot get it to come together.
most difficult problem of writing fanfiction is when you need a character to express the particular surprised/dismayed/disappointed sentiment of going "jesus christ" but this isn't a lore friendly thing to say and there's nothing lore friendly that conveys quite the same emotion
