There are some characters where giving them therapy and cleaning them up is the fanfiction equivalent of buying antique furniture and painting it white

absolutely flabbergasting to see people who have so enthusiastically succumbed to despair. like okay denethor, but some of us are gonna actually face the armies of mordor in battle nonetheless.

The thing about Denethor is that he not only succumbed to despair, he wanted to ensure that Faramir succumbed with him. Similarly, a lot of people now are not only succumbing to despair, they're actively proselytizing despair, trying to convince others to join them in their hopelessness. Despair is apparently lonely and they want company in their self-immolation.

btw denethor succumbed to despair bc he was doomscrolling on the palantir. Sauron tweaked his algorithm so he only saw bad news, and he fell into the trap of thinking the world couldn't be saved.

maybe nothing better than your fave who is a liarrrrr having the most miserable time of their life. deciding the truth is worse than whatever respite they might get from showing where they’re soft and vulnerable and committing to it. And then of course having something carve it out of them anyway like godddd what if you gave the most important performance of your life and it didn’t even save you. what then! what then!!!!!

Instead of trying to digitally reverse age actors for The Hunt for Gollum I think they should abandon the script entirely and just put Viggo Mortensen in costume and film him chasing Andy Serkis in a leotard across the scenic landscapes of Aotearoa. Give Andy Serkis a head start. Viggo will probably become Aragorn several hours into the chase. Locals can aid or hinder as they see fit.

Now I’m imagining a hoard of Fetts around a cork board with yarn trying to figure out which brother they need to make fun of.

“Can’t be Keeli he’s dating a professor with the spirit of a frat boy.”

“Can’t be Cody he’s still pining.”

“Can’t be Rex he’s disgustingly in love.”

That's it that's the plot of the fic.

“Venting with more steps” adghnsjsbbshjghk for real tho, that’s like one of my main writing motivations XD

Spite is a great motivation, but ngl I've always had far more luck with following through on things when the motivation is okay but just let me rant for a bit.

I was just going through and rereading a bunch of your older fics, and one thing that really impresses me is that even when you only publish the first chapter or two of a WIP they really stand on their own as a story worth reading without any expectation of imminent updates. Like, they’re the start of a longer story that would be cool to read if the fanfic muses cooperate, but they don’t just feel like setting pieces in place for a not yet written story, they have a satisfying character/plot arc in themselves. Definitely something I am keeping in mind for my own writing to avoid the trap of several introductory chapters where nothing happens.

Thank you!! I have a major love of stories that start in media res, and I've spent years trying to figure out the best way to start a story so that you're invested and have at least some idea of what's going on without having to stretch things out. As a reader, I usually read the first chapter of a book and make a decision about whether to buy it/check it out from that, so I try to keep in mind what I personally look for when I'm writing. It's really helped me, tbh, and it also makes it easy for me to come back to a fic and find all the plot points I've established so I know where I meant to take the plot, even if it's been a while since I last touched the fic.

Indomitable: I’ve remembered his name! Fett!

Ulic looking at the seven Fetts just in the immediate vicinity: do you realize how little that narrows it down?

Truly it would be terrible for the Fett he married if Indomitable had to ask for help in identifying the brother who married him and then bailed. Truly awful. Might even give the wider Fett clan ammunition to tease the brother in question for the rest of forever.

I actually ADORE it when a character crashes out. Let them YELL let them SCREAM let them HURT THOSE AROUND THEM with or without meaning to. I need to see more crash outs
