This pic is one of my fav coco pics bc she just looks like a fawn…..
Hannibal is a show that would’ve benefited so much from being in a language that distinguishes between formal and informal tones. it would’ve been so interesting to see Will and Hannibal going from the “usted” to “tu” form depending on what their relationship is like. I think Hannibal would probably go to informal around the time he starts calling Will his friend and wouldn’t switch back, while Will would probably go back and forth a lot because of how… complicated his feelings are a lot of the time
In the last episode of The Day of the Jackal, when Bianca and the Jackal both stare into the one-way mirror, the Jackal can see his own face overlapping with Bianca's, whereas Bianca can only see her own face.
This points to how the Jackal fully recognizes that he and Bianca are very similar-- they're completely dedicated to their jobs to the detriment of anything else, and they'll steamroll their own morals and enact violence on others for the sake of performing that job. We can tell that he sees them as similar because when Bianca later asks him why he does what he does, he says, "Why do you?"
On the other hand, it's likely that Bianca doesn't see them that way. We've seen her questioning herself and realizing her intentions may not be as pure as she told herself, but she doesn't seem to get to the point of comparing herself to the Jackal.
She still views just herself in the mirror, as a distinct individual. She doesn't see the Jackal, lurking just behind the surface of the fragile glass of her self-image.
Oh I really love this analysis
I've been mulling over Bianca's character for so long and something I've noticed is that she lies to herself pretty heavily sometimes. You can see this like how Bianca tackles her guilt after Alison and Emma or responds to Paul's criticisms, how it's always "what I had to do for the greater good", she frames it in a way that hurts less. (I realize it sounds like I'm being harsh on her lol but I'm not really aiming criticism.) It's what makes her human, she doesn't fully see her faults
the problem with "the day of the jackal" is that they didn't go full crazy insane deranged psychosexually obsessed with it
Obsessed over the Bianca/Jackal final scene where right before they both stand in front of the mirror, the jackal had the secret door open and he was checking out what’s going on outside.
I think the fear he felt in that moment wasn’t that “the police found me”, it’s more like a quiet, horrifying realization that this side of his life has completely intruded and destroyed the other side of his life.
It’s the fear of losing control over two separate lives that up until this point he’s kept segregated perfectly, 100%, but now that illusion has toppled with Bianca finally compromising his home, she’s physically intruded into this side of his world, I think he must be horrified.
But I think he also has this hubris that is so integral to his character that even in moments like this he’s not threatened by her, which is so funny because the same hubris earlier led him to believe he can have two perfectly separated lives forever. And now he’s facing Bianca and I think he’s annoyed but also he’s giving her a nod of approval like “finally, someone kind of on my level”
His little sociopathic priorities are so silly
Saw someone writing about how the jackal couldn’t speak Spanish when he first met Nuria and learned phrases to be able to ask her out. Which is a sweet thought. And it’s romantic. But I’m more inclined to believe he already spoke fluent Spanish when he met her, that’s really the only scenario where it makes sense why he felt the need to hide how good his Spanish is, because he’s playing the character of “Charles”. If he genuinely didn’t know Spanish he could’ve just acted like a normal person who doesn’t know Spanish.
Something that really stumped me for a while was how the Jackal's trigger to becoming a full-time hitman was his team committing a war crime and killing a bunch of innocents but then he seems more than fine with killing innocents in the present. Looking back that was a little stupid of me and a smarter person would have guessed way quicker that he had probably lost himself over the years -- especially with Gary, the only person who knew him as Alexander Duggan and could have tethered him into reality being AWOL -- but I never said I was smart now did I.
The corruption arc would have been interesting thing to see in the show but I also think that the Jackal has a fairly distanced approached in knowing himself (losing yourself so you can find another person within you etc. etc.) so even he probably doesn't understand how much he has changed.
Apparently Jan and Carlitos were gifted two engraved seals with the meaning of…. Husband and Wife 😭😭😭
Oh and of course Carlitos had the “wife” one
😭😭😭😭
Thank you to the friend who shared this with me ❤️😁
