A whistleblower at the fascist DHS has released the names of 4,500 ICE and Border Patrol agents, providing an unprecedented means to monitor and counter their local presence
Ice is now targeting Native Americans on reservations, specifically Standing Rock.
[Image description: mobile screenshot taken from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Facebook that is a statement released by the Chief of Standing Rock. The statement reads as follows:
Chairman sitting Bear's statement regarding SRST Public Safety, January 9th, 2026.
I have been receiving reports and evidence of First Nations people being racially targeted, assaulted, and detained by the federal agency Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE). We want to remind our members to be safe and proactive by carrying with you at a minimum your tribal identification cards or a copy of your degree of Indian Blood. Our tribal identification affirms our citizenship and political status.
Our Nation is a sovereign government and our members are not immigrants. We are not subject to immigrant enforcement on our own lands. Any federal activity within our boundaries must recognize and respect our tribal sovereignty, treaty obligations, and established jurisdictional boundaries. Any ICE presence or activity within our lands is not authorized, not welcome, and will be addressed. Unauthorized personnel will be escorted off our lands.
If you are profiled, harassed, or detained, please notify us immediately (701) 854-8529. My staff is working on a "Know Your Rights" information phone line that will be released in the incoming days. Please watch our social media page for further communication.
Again, I strongly advise all First Nations people to carry your tribal information as a practical measure. Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is committed to the protection, dignity, and well-being of our own people and to the continued exercise of our rights and jurisdiction. End image description.]
The reactionary backlash to media analysis is a natural part of the wider "fascists hate anything intellectual" phenomenon, btw.
Wanting you to ignore the politics of Star Wars comes from the same exact place that wants you to substitute the germ theory of disease with the 'sickness comes from failure to be a good christian and most people who claim to be sick are just faking anyway' myth.
To take a quote from Dan Olson:
They don't want these complexities to exist, and by talking about them, you make them exist. It's a form of magical thought. Talking about police brutality wills police brutality into existence. A disruption of the status quo is seen as a disruption of the natural order. The problem they see is that no-one has made those people shut up. That is what they want: someone to come in and make those people shut up and go away, to put things back "where they belong." [...] Their will is a hammer that they are using to beat reality itself into a shape of their choosing, a simple world where reality is exactly what it looks like through their eyes, devoid of complexity, devoid of change, where they are right and their enemies are silent. They are trying to build a flat earth.

From a Doylist perspective I understand why Gregor made Aral Viceroy of Sergeyar - LMB needed to get him & Cordelia out of the narrative. Aral being available in Memory ESPECIALLY would have made it a VERY different book - imagine Haroche not letting Aral Vorkosigan, the greatest man of a generation and Simon's long-time colleague, not see Simon. See also: if Cordelia had been easily available at the BEGINNING of ACC, there's no way Miles would have been permitted to fuck the Ekaterin thing up so bad.
But about running Sergeyar from OJ&RQ.... that job is fucking hard! The last guy begged to come home! Dumb ass shit is always happening! Bullshit politics! Stressful, long-term-ramification decisions to make! Many competing factions with upsides and downsides! Gregor, this is NOT!!! a job for an old man who had a massive cardiac event and needed a new heart!!!
(At some point I will make a post about how Aral worked since he was 11 years old until the day he died and this is an incredibly impactful narrative structure for the books as a whole.)
#I also think it's possible that if Aral is not given a demanding job he will find something even worse for himself#Gregor gives him and Cordelia a two month long vacation and Aral ends up pulling some sort of Miles#he and Cordelia come back with like#new contacts on Earth#info about a secret bioweapon#rumors about another lost planet#some bewildered hastily-acquired retainers#a five refugee families interested in emigrating#plans for a new space station in the jumps between barrayar and sergyar#and some flowers for Alys that Cordelia thought were lovely and biologically interesting
These tags pass peer review, especially when you consider Gregor let Simon recover a little too long and then the ImpSec building sunk.
Miles gets his Australian shepherd qualities from someone and I don’t think it’s Cordelia. Sure, she gets into Situations, but she also knows how to work steadily toward a long term goal (improving education and healthcare in her county, for example) without tripping over three conspiracies and a sleeper cell that end up burning the hospital to the ground.
the fundraiser for Renée Macklin Good’s family has well surpassed its goal and is now closed — if you want to help Minneapolis residents as the city is terrorized by ICE raids, please turn your attention toward this fundraiser for local families, as well as Adelina Olivarez Cardona and Arturo Sanchez Chinos, both of whom are currently being detained.
additionally, you can support the family of keith porter jr, who was shot and killed by an off duty ICE agent on new years
i promise: however big you think this wave will be, it is bigger
That wasn’t a joke. I aimed my estimate high and then added some.
The wave was bigger.
I like to imagine that, thousands of years ago, humans still stood a (reasonably) safe distance from the ocean during weather like this to watch the waves, hooting and cheering when the spray came closer than expected and left them drenched
Me trying to accomplish my to-do list this week
Looking at what national news outlets are up to right now, one might not realize a whole major US metropolitan area is, you know, sort of under attack by paramilitary forces. Wild.
im sorry the What is being What now???
While it's not going unreported entirely, what's been happening in Minnesota and in Minneapolis–Saint Paul in particular since Renee Good was murdered is not getting the attention it should be.
There are already 2000 gangsters from DHS deployed, and "hundreds" or "1000" more are on the way, depending on which Trumpland person you ask. As a point of reference, the Twin Cities' actual police total just under 1200 (600 in Minneapolis and 590 in Saint Paul according to the depts' sites).
The feds there are more or less attacking people at random. They've gone door-to-door for "citizenship checks" (completely illegal). They've knocked doors down when residents haven't complied (obviously also completely illegal). In addition to abducting and brutalizing the immigrants they come across during their rampages, they've done the same to US citizens of color and are also harassing, stalking and physically attacking observers.
Here are some local sources:

Below are some videos from observers. I'm linking to Bluesky because that's where I saw them, though many are originally from/also available elsewhere. I apologize for the rancid formatting below but it was the best I could do quickly-ish. The images are previews; click the links in the timestamps to watch.

the new york times is now charging money for my favorite chocolate cake recipe so i bought a subscription and screenshotted it and canceled my subscription and now it's here for you for free
i do a mixture of red wine and fresh squeezed navel orange juice for the liquid, plus the zest of one large orange. now you make the cake
MADE! Definitely a keeper recipe. I did Half earl gray tea and fresh orange juice (and zest) for the liquid. Made cream cheese frosting to top following joshua weissman's carrot cake recipe just subbed heavy cream for more fresh orange juice (cause i didn't have heavy cream lmao) And sprinkled some cinnamon on top.
Very good! Make this cake to get a good cake and say fuck you to nyt (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
saw a post that claims that STEM smart people are smarter than humanities smart people because “any math student who speaks english can flip through an english book and understand it, but i’d like to see an english student do college math.” i have to say 1. holy disingenuous comparison batman, and 2. as someone who ta’d the english side of an english/biology fusion class, no the fuck they cannot. forget a collegiate level, we were struggling to teach these STEM major upperclassmen how to identify what’s on the page and articulate the themes on a high school level. the course texts were two YA novels and a handful of short stories. meanwhile all the humanities students were chugging through the biochemistry at what my colleague reported was an extremely respectable level. turns out that understanding what you’re reading is a skill just like any other, AND one with transferable applications
do you ever think about how if you dive into the ocean and go deeper and deeper you will pass through layers of darker and darker blue until everything is black and cold and the pressure will be so intense that it will kill you without protection but if you keep going you will find little glowing specks of light, and if you go up into the sky and go higher and higher you will pass through layers of darker and darker blue until everything is black and cold and the pressure will be so intense that it will kill you without protection but if you keep going you will find little glowing specks of light
sometimes a post makes you get out of bed at 230am to spend a quick hour on something like this
[Image description: A color image in portrait orientation. The background transitions smoothly from a starfield on black at the top, through dark blue, medium blue, lighter blue, then back to medium, dark, and another starfield at the bottom. In the very center is a black silhouette of a human figure, appearing to float on its back as on the surface of water. Above it in the blue "sky" area are a curved, thin white line like the contrail of a jet aircraft, and two small black silhouettes of seabirds. Below in the deep dark blue, just before the starfield, are some silhouettes of fish. /end description]

WRONG. talk about it. shout about it. yell about it. scream about it. so what if it’s a fanfic? it’s done with love and passion. it’s art created by a fellow human being who, despite life and lord knows what battle they may or may not be going through, probably stayed up all night writing it before they shared it with the world for free. they’d probably spent months or years writing it. it’s as much a piece of art and literature as any other art and literature that aren’t fanfics. and unlike artists who make profit off their works, fanfic writers truly write for free, because they are that passionate about their stories. the least we can do is show them our love and appreciation.
