Re: blorbo from my research, here is my favorite ever case study. I'm obsessed with it.
Summary:
- Guy presents to neurology with muscle issues, very clearly has something going on but diagnostic tests are inconclusive
- History is mostly unremarkable. Key word, mostly. He drinks four liters of plain Earl Grey tea per day. For context this is nearly twice the recommended daily fluid intake. All fluids, to be clear, not just tea. He only drinks tea tho
- Bergamot is known to be phototoxic in high doses (reacts badly on your skin with sunlight)
- APPARENTLY nobody previously has consumed enough of it for it to be widely known that it is also, apparently, mildly toxic to ingest in high doses
- Guy starts drinking plain black tea again. Only 2 liters this time (he didn't have a medical reason to drink that much tea, he just liked it) and so now he's fully recovered

i keep adding “squirtle” to the phrase “i’m dying” whenever i say it
“i’m dying, squirtle”
i don’t know why????????? is it a reference i’ve forgotten or am i just fu ckin tatched in the head who knows
"you should be at the club" incorrect "you should be at pirate weekend at the renn fair" well this we cannot refute.
I’m at the point where my meds don’t fit confortably in my pill organizer, and I’m this close to buying a bunch of plastic capsules and a gumball machine and calling it a day.
Gotta get one of those three in ones
... I should have known better than to post this to tumblr. Y’all just pilot my lack of impulse control like a mech at this point.
After years of living in the adulting world, I think I’ve come to a realization: Manners exist to guide you to good conduct even when you’re in a bad mood.
When you’re happy, when you’re feeling generous, when you’re pleased with your gift or your service or your outcome, it’s easy to be nice. It’s easy to tip the waiter well when you’ve had a good day. It’s easy to thank the teller or the clerk when you got what you wanted out of the transaction. It’s easy to smile and chit-chat with strangers on the road when you’re in a good mood.
It’s hard to tip the waiter when you didn’t enjoy your food. It’s hard to thank the clerk for their time when you’ve just been told there’s a problem with their account and they weren’t able to fix it for you. It’s hard to think of something nice to say when your aunt gave you a crappy sweater you neither need nor want. It’s hard to be nice to people when you’ve had a shitty day. It’s HARD.
That’s what manners are for. Scripts and phrases that you learn by rote to say when you can’t think of a single nice or good thing to say from your own volition. Yes, they’re scripted. Yes, the sentiment is empty. But the scripts work in every situation, and the emptiness provides a buffer between your own unhappiness and the rest of society.
Because most of the time, it’s not the waiter’s fault that the food you ordered wasn’t what you expected. It’s not the clerk’s fault that your account is overdrawn. It’s not the fault of the barista or the stranger on the subway that you got fired today or your favorite aunt died. But even when you can’t summon a smile or a cheery word, you can still have manners, because they will serve you the same in sunshine or rain.
This is very wise and very well put.
Heeeey this is smart, I’m gonna use this to explain ‘pointless’ manners to the kids I teach. Let them know it’s a default script that can make their life easier, and not something they must force themselves to do for the sake of social judgement.
Thanks, op, this helps a lot. I was taught as a kid that there were three very important keywords that would help in almost every situation: please, sorry and thank you, and even though I took their description as ‘keys’ very much to heart, I never realised they work exactly as you describe!

This took me too long
so fucking stupid that meds literally work. "swallow this pebble it makes you think" hateful
she cries if I dont hold her, so I have to use my exercise bike like this
i got a 100% on this bostonian-to-english quiz but i grew up near boston..... i'm curious what you guys get. there's a couple things in here i didn't even know are regionalisms + a couple things i hadn't heard before but could parse pretty easily from context. tag/reply with what you got and if you're familiar with the area or not!
God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers and I'm dodging the draft
