The hive is Carol's heroin dealer -- and the season followed the path of her life. Fighting with everything she had as a girl, trying to save herself with her anger and fire and defiance, but eventually being so battered and broken down, mentally and physically, by the way people treated her that it was either die or escape into something, a substance that would ease the pain. Helen made it worth it to try to be present, but it was a struggle. And Helen is gone. Hive!Zosia isn't a wife, she's a drug meant to soothe Carol into complacency so they can consume her. That's all.

They have Carol talk about how she doesn't know how to be happy -- you know what does that to a human brain and body? What makes the chemicals the hive talks about hard for your mind and body to process normally??

Extensive trauma. The kind of pain that people turn to substances to self-medicate. The kind that makes them not want to live.
