As we end one year and begin another I’m once again going to be that annoying asshole and offer:

If you donate ANY AMOUNT to a food bank or LGBTQ+ organization and message me your receipt (black out all those details babe)- I will write you any pairing of your choice (y’all know my writing boundaries by now).

I’m going to leave this pinned and open for the foreseeable future. I know times are tough for us all but if you’ve got the ability to donate even a little bit it can go a long way. And I’d love to write you something as a thanks for your generosity!

"rpf is for fun" no its not. its for psychologically torturing yourself. its the penance you have to pay for caring that much about famous people

my best tip for anyone trying to get back into reading is to remember that you can read books to avoid other responsibilities in ur life and it can become a vice if you play your cards right

has anyone ever actually seen a shareholder or are we just supposed to believe they actually exist

one of the reasons why "what if people went on a road trip and it was weird" is one of the oldest story types is that a lot of sense of personhood has been, historically, tied to place. the weird road trip says "what if we went somewhere else, where no one knows us, and tried out being a different person".

Odysseus, the famous liar, goes on a weird road trip & over the course of it becomes several different people, and then comes home & is all those people as well as himself, wearing the echoes of those other people

What’s that quote? There are only two kinds of stories: a man goes on a journey, or a stranger comes to town.

in my mind everyone in the nhl is texting tyson barrie asking if they should watch the gay hockey show and he's texting each one back with a considered response. no. yes. no you're not ready yet but give it two to four years and you'll be at the right point in your journey. yes please live-text me your responses (FINGERS IN MOUTH!!!!!). no absolutely not. god no. i know you already have you don't need to ask me for retroactive permission. no. no. yes and you better do it before geno moves back to russia

things ppl often get wrong in academia AUs (specifically ones in modern university settings with focus on graduate students & professors):

  • no one is spending enough time complaining about writing
  • hierarchy is wrong. your grad student TA is not a professor or faculty and might not even be considered an employee. that 32 year old man is not a full professor no matter how talented he is or how old you think 30+ is, and he should be talking more about "the tenure clock"
  • grad students only ever taking or TAing classes & never doing research or working on their thesis/dissertation. there are masters programs with no thesis component so i'm sure there are ones that have no research requirement, but you can't get a PhD only taking classes
  • everyone has too much money. but also if it's set in the US there's an obsession with accumulating student debt for positions that generally you would not have to take out loans for
  • relationship with academic advisor never sufficiently unhinged
  • not enough discussion of stats where it's obvious everyone only barely understands what's happening

"what is a sufficiently unhinged student-advisor relationship?"

ⓘ Tip If you feel unfulfilled by how you spent your time today, you can stay up late to try to combat the sense of dissatisfaction. This will ensure that you feel even worse tomorrow.

So difficult to withhold the eyeroll when people say things like, "My body was designed for this" wrt childbirth or whatever, because even if I accept the premise that our bodies were designed, I have to imagine mine was designed with the most basic function of breathing in mind, and yet I had childhood asthma and would have died without intervention so idk if I'm trusting my "designer" with something as physically traumatic and historically deadly as childbirth

''when did we all become so performative'' idk man when the threat of being recorded at any time and posted for milions to see without your knowledge became normalised.

What I dig here is the act of asking a simple question out of idle curiosity turns into a lengthy investigation into the answer to that question. This is the basic impulse behind science as a methodology. Why is that? How is that? Rudimentary inquiries that blossom into fully fledged theories (in the scientific sense, not the colloquial sense). I enjoy anecdotes like this because I find pleasure in people taking their interests for long walks and getting to an unexpected location, with unanticipated conclusions. Who would have guessed that the "Tri" in "Triscuits" was an abbreviation of "electricity?" Not me. Like most of the things I read on the internet, I thought to myself, "Is this story true?" Turns out that it is. Sure, the journey here involves nothing of consequence and the information revealed is next to worthless but the act of acquiring a definitive answer must have been deeply satisfying.

Scooby-Doo is a dog who can talk, which is amazing, and he largely uses his powers of speech to communicate how scared he is of ghosts and monsters, and basically the only thing his owners do is drive him around the country putting him inside various haunted houses and such. I wish I could take Scooby-Doo aside, I want to say to him, these people are not your friends.
