hey so I know this looks cool and fun but but did you know if you lift starfish/sea stars out of the water, even if it's just for a few seconds, they will be extremely likely to die a very painful death? If they don't suffocate or dry out, which can happen within less than a few minutes, they'll die of stress, either soon after or within like a week. I feel like not enough people know this and it's really sad

I’m not sure where you heard that but good news, it’s definitely not true. I agree that you shouldn’t handle wild animals unless you know what you’re doing and certainly being picked up by a human could pose risk of introducing bacteria, but I’m a marine biologist who works at a facility where we handle starfish pretty regularly and they do perfectly fine. They can survive several hours out of the water at low tide and being picked up briefly doesn’t really bother an otherwise healthy starfish. They are certainly not dying of stress from being gently bothered by a curious human
