Premise: Two times Ethan wished for someone to wake up to, and the one time he did. Set during different moments in intern year.

This fic was inspired by @creativepromptsforwriting Prompt 729 (5 times Person A woke up without Person B and 1 time they woke up together.) I shortened it to fit my story. Tagging for reblog to @creativepromptfills

I.

There was something buzzing in the summer night air.

Ethan Ramsey couldn’t define what it was, but it felt as if his life was hanging on the precipice of something impossible. Punching the pillow, he turned on his side and stared at the neon numbers of the digital clock on his bedside table.

Three a.m. The Witching Hour.

Not that he believed in witches, wizards, or spirits that went bump in the night. He was a man of science, after all.

And yet, he couldn’t argue with Hamlet—there were more things in heaven and earth than were dreamt of in human philosophy. The mysteries of the human body were impossible to fully decipher.

So much so that he had determined to devote his life to doing exactly that. He’d be utterly useless at it unless he managed to catch some sleep.

There were a bunch of dating prompt reblogs today, and it was tough to choose which ones to write about, but I eventually was able to pin it down!

Ship: Kalcal x Zenobos

Prompts: going to an all-you-can-eat-buffet and staying for hours; “You never have to fear that you’re losing me.”

It was Kalcal’s idea for him & Zenobos to go to the buffet for the entire day.  Zenobos had been hesitant at first, bur once they got things started, he had to admit: this had been a great idea!  Currently, it was lunch, and they had been talking & laughing together in their booth all through the day.

“And that was the first time I slaughtered a Smiler!” Kalcal said, concluding his tale as he munched on spaghetti & meatballs.

“Huh, that’s quite a story,” Zenobos said, cutting into his chicken pot pie.

“Thanks!” Kalcal exclaimed.  “Obviously, it wasn’t my first time fighting Smilers.  And of course, my most memorable battle with them was the time I saved you.”

Zenobos smiled.  “Yeah, um, I’d have to agree.”  Then, his smile faded, and he said, “Um, can I admit something to you right now?”

“Anything, little buddy!” Kalcal replied.  “What’s up?”

Zenobos sighed.  “Sometimes . . . I’m worried about losing you,” he admitted, tearing up.  Once that came out, the rest spilled out of him in a rush, unable to be contained.  “Because I can’t fight or defend myself well but YOU CAN, and that makes me feel like I’m a BURDEN on you sometimes, like I weigh you down—”

“Hey, hey, slow down!” Kalcal exclaimed.  He stood up and went to the other side of the booth, sitting next to Zenobos.  He reached over and tilted Zenobos’s chin upwards, looking his friend right in the eye. 

“Listen to me.  You never have to be afraid you’re losing me,” Kalcal told his friend.  “Because that’s not going to happen.  I’m with you for the long haul.”

Zenobos sniffled.  “R-Really?”

“Yeah, I promise,” Kalcal replied, giving Zenobos a smile.  “So don’t worry, ok?  I’m not going anywhere!”

Tears trickled down Zenobos’s face, and he threw his arms around Kalcal in a big hug.  Kalcal smiled and hugged Zenobos back, giving him a squeeze.

“Feel better?” Kalcal asked when they let go.

“Yeah,” Zenobos replied.  He gave Kalcal a smile.  “That was really weighing on me, so I’m glad I don’t have to worry about that.  I’m glad you’re going to stick with me.”

“Of course I am, little buddy!” Kalcal exclaimed.  “You can’t get rid of me that easily!”

Kalcal stood up to go back to his side of the booth—but Zenobos reached up, the short entity tugging his sleeve.  “Stay on this side,” Zenobos said, blushing.  “P-Please?”

Kalcal smiled.  “Ok, little buddy.  I can’t say no to you!”

He sat back down, and brought his plate over.  Soon, the two were eating and chatting again, enjoying themselves
