secret santa present for @papier-ciseaux which was actually a present for me as i had the perfect excuse to draw every fox pokemon :>
part 7 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: katara
my rationale for these picks is: primarina - has a signature move capable of healing burns, and is probably the water starter that i feel best represents katara overall milotic - known for its power and beauty but has humble beginnings and a lot of effort put in to achieve its ultimate form vaporeon - ngl i mostly just wanted an excuse to draw another eeveelution haha. but i also feel like she'd have one, its graceful and cute in a way that would appeal to her i think as a dedicated master of the water type, she has a strong tendency to use dive balls.
part 6 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: mai my rationale for these picks is: doublade - i belatedly realised this one could've gone really well with zuko so i gave it to the next best person suited for it haha. besides, as a nonbender mai probably has more use for it pawniard - probably self-explanatory. dark/steel type. stabby. the perfect mon for an edgy blade-wielder gothorita - perpetually bored and uppity goth teenager. also ig i thought it'd be fun to redesign her outfit to be vaguely gothitelle-inspired haha as a true goth, mai would never be caught using anything besides dusk balls.
part 5 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: ty lee my rationale for these picks is: jigglypuff - small round and cute, an adept performer, disable is one of the first moves it can learn scorbunny - athletic, flexible and a strong jumper; although its more of an athlete i can totally see it in a circus setting. also ty lee herself has rabbit vibes to me emolga - can also easily be imagined as a stunt performer, plus is one of the first pokemon i think of when i think of the move acrobatics as a performer who deeply understands the importance of routine, she likes to use repeat balls.
part 4 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: azula my rationale for this picks is: chandelure - pretty blue flames that Will Kill You. also bougie and edgy. luxray - it was a tossup between this one and manectric for azula's electric type. while i liked the idea of her having a team that could all mega evolve i like luxray more and feel it fits her better overall (also luxray SHOULD have a mega but that's beside the point). houndoom - she needs a dark type, and also i feel like ozai def has a houndoom on his own team so this is here to effectively symbolise their connection and spare me from having to draw ozai seperately haha. as an elitist who believes only in perfectionism, she of course specialises in using ultra balls.
part 3 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: iroh my rationale for these picks is: torkoal - old man who loves hot springs and is a consistent source of warmth for those around him sinistcha - the green tea pokemon. self-explanatory (also neither fire nor electric type as a reference to how iroh has studied bending styles from outside the fire nation) bellibolt - as a lightningbending master he needs an electric type, and this one is simply the most iroh as someone whose years of experience have taught him that patience is the key to pokemon battles, he specialises in using timer balls.
part 2 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: toph
my rationale for these picks is: torterra - chosen mainly to fit toph's green colourscheme, but also because i think toph would approve of its category being the 'continent pokemon' (which is of course shared by groudon but that's a legendary and therefore cheating) rhyperior - one of the biggest baddest rockslingers of the pokeverse, you just know this one would clean up at an earthbender wrestling tournament steelix - represents toph's discovery of metalbending by being a steel type evolved from a rock type (and also one of the first steel types introduced as such). she uses only heavy balls as she likes to have as many pokemon capable of kicking up dust clouds upon entry on her team as possible.
part 1 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: zuko
my rationale for these picks is: emboar - has strong inspiration from chinese martial arts figures, evolved from a pokemon based on an animal often stereotyped as weak, lazy, and/or dirty (how ozai sees him) litleo - indicates his connection to royalty, though unevolved since he hasn't ascended the throne yet flareon - cute and fluffy while also having a lot of firepower, hinting at his hidden soft side. he also mainly uses fast balls due to being irritable and impatient :v
