Ryan Guzman as Eddie Diaz 9-1-1 | Season 9 Episode 7 | Secrets
I am genuinely freaking out that Eddie was very adamant that he wasn’t interested in that girl, but was very openly, canonically bitter about buck getting her number. So it’s unmistakable that he’s not upset because Buck is stealing his thunder, because that interest was never there. There’s no reading this some other way.
guilty as sin
rated: E | 2k words | 9.07 - Secrets coda | Eddie comes out to Ravi, pines about Buck, then goes home and jerks off about it.
“It’s girls, right?”
“What?" It's all Eddie can bring himself to say, the only word his mouth is able to form while his mind is still processing the question.
“Girls," Ravi repeats, giving Eddie a look that says it should be obvious what he means. It's not obvious (or maybe he just doesn't want it to be), so he gives his head a small shake. Ravi continues, "Dating. It's not that you don't want to date anyone, it's that you don't want to date girls."
also another great thing about the club scene is that it's maybe the first time as far as I can remember that ravi and eddie have had a 1:1 scene together? and ravi's impressions of eddie previously have been second-hand mostly from buck (who makes eddie sound extremely cool and like a saint on earth), and watching eddie on calls and in inner circle social gatherings (where he seems very charming and funny and competent). hell, the last significant time ravi directly interacted with eddie was eddie saving his ass in the s8 finale and him being starry-eyed over it.
and then the club. watching buckandeddie in a social setting outside of the 118 and seeing eddie be just. such a little failmop of a man in a club setting. watching buck with alternatively pining and extremely jealous eyes. grumpily and hornily drinking beer as buck is in his element flirting and being a charmer. truly ravi must've been like. oh fuck they're both losers for each other.
i love that buck and eddie are still not communicating properly after texas. something seriously shifted, and they still aren't on the same page.
buck pushed eddie to get back out there and said he can't keep using christopher as an excuse, but the thing is, that trauma is still very much unresolved for eddie. and typically, that is something buck would pick up on. i have no doubt buck thought he had good intentions. all he wants is his best friend to be happy. but there was also a bit of selfishness there. if buck wingmans for eddie, he can't be in love because he is so supportive. of course, yeah, eddie doesn't actually sleep with anyone. and yeah, maybe buck sleeps with the person he thought was interested in eddie. but he still was soooo supportive.
meanwhile, eddie didn't want that at all. he was resistant and only went out because buck wanted him to. he didn't fight, but he had excuses at every turn. and buck let him! buck let him have the excuses! eddie wordlessly communicated with ravi, but buck didn't see it. buck didn't see how eddie's eyes didn't leave buck the entire night.
they aren't on the same page, and i am very excited to see how that progresses.
heated rivalry + text posts // part three.
not sure if other people will weigh in, but my two cents as a hockey fan: i think in canadian hockey culture in particular they perceive russian hockey and russian hockey players to be different/inferior (this is true of euro hockey in general, but especially in the 2010s the vitriol was really reserved for russians). russian hockey players are considered flashy and selfish, not like the good, hardworking canadian boys. it probably sounds ridiculous but these xenophobic narratives are so baked into hockey discourse. to me, things like "cock-sucking russian" is not saying anything about sexuality so much as "guy who is willing to draw attention to himself" which is deeply frowned upon in canadian/north american hockey culture
LOVE this contribution and I think the idea that calling a guy a “cock-sucking russian” has nothing to do with his sexuality works WONDERFULLY in parallel with there being a russian word for faggot that isn’t actually meant to imply someone is gay. because like but that’s the POINT! the homophobia is so at the foundation of the thing that it isn’t even the actual thing being commented on. the notorious ladies’ man who is confident in his masculinity isn’t being called gay because he seems like he might be, he’s being called a cock-sucker because FUCK that guy! and love all the information typifying russian hockey players—it’s interesting to think that ilya has some awareness of these perceptions and has decided to just play into them or at least not waste time worrying that he might be coming across as a typical arrogant russian player when he’s getting the job done. perfect cross-section of xenophobia and homophobia—for the other players, he’s not a faggot because he’s gay, he’s a faggot because he’s RUSSIAN!
Cute loser dork Shane pulling Ilya has to be studied by nasa or something
okay on the one hand I get it: ilya is SO hot and shane is such a sweet little dweeb. but I do think we should remember that shane is canonically SOOOO good at hockey. the show admittedly does not do the best job of convincing us of this, but they are meant to be equals who are at the very pinnacle of their sport. I’d guess that ilya’s probably never played against someone who can offer him a real challenge, and I bet it’s VERY hot to be like oh this person pushes me hard, this person forces me to be better in every way, this person is somebody who others describe as one of the greatest athletes in his sport… and he wants to get on his knees and suck my dick. he wants it so bad he’s panting for it. he’s begging me to let him. combine that with the devastating reveal that shane is a total sweetheart AND a complete innocent who trusts you to be all of his firsts?? I think actually… not so hard to see why ilya would find that irresistible
