I have this theory that in Inception, Eames is very nearly on his way to being addicted to dreaming.

When we first see him in Mombasa, he's quite literally a loser - the first thing we see him doing is losing a dice roll. He's gambling in illegal gambling dens, using his forgery skills on petty crime (that stack of 100 Kenyan shilling tokens is maybe USD$30) and generally kind of a sleazy guy.

We see him in Yusuf's dream den, we're specifically shown Eames’ reaction. He's disgusted and I think scared too.

When we see him in Paris planning the dream heist, he's aloof, talking clinically about how to get the job done, and fidgety. The only signs of personality are when he's needling Arthur (because Arthur just brings that out in him), and some of it is entirely uncalled for (Arthur was genuinely impressed!).

When he's one level under, he's teasing Yusuf, downright flirting with Arthur, and talks Cobb down. When he's two levels under, he's seducing Robert, teasing Saito and having a great time. Three levels and he's basically James Bond, saving the day.

I wonder how much of his topside snippiness comes from withdrawal and wanting to get back into dreaming?

Since he's a supporting character, this arc is unfinished. In the Eames' own words:

Shame. I wanted to know what was gonna happen in there. I swear we had this.

Unfortunately I don't have anywhere near the life experience or knowledge to be able to be able to fully depict it with the sensitivity it deserves, so I'm just putting this idea out into the world to make it everyone else's problem.

I loved your idea so much and I wrote a fic based on it here about Eames being addicted to dreaming. I also combined it with the Eames amnesia idea from @missingfawkes because I loved that so much too and I had to write something for it!

Title: waiting for sunrise (1.8k)

Summary:

“What are you thinking about?” Arthur asks. “Dreaming,” Eames snaps. “What else would I be thinking about?” And then he sags. “Sorry. I shouldn’t have raised my voice.” “That’s alright.” Arthur wets a washcloth and runs it over Eames’ bare arms. There is a fresh purple bruise on the inside of his right arm, where the IV drip to administer the somnacin would have gone. Doubtless the bruise is tender to the touch. Arthur avoids touching it, not wanting to cause Eames any more pain. “How long were you under?” “A week.” It’s a lie and the both of them know it. If it had only been a week, Eames would not have been so exhausted. If it had only been a week, Eames would not look so guilty.

Eames is addicted to dreaming.

i want to take a moment to express genuine gratitude towards heated rivalry the tv show and everyone involved with making it happen because. i kind of almost didn’t know we could have this? a beautiful and intense and intimate queer love story with a happy ending that doesn’t try to sell us something else and doesn’t try to be sexless to seem more palatable for straight people and doesn’t feel forced and where nobody’s acting like they’re doing us a huuuge big favor for letting it exist. it means a lot

Why I feel that YoI betrayed its own narrative - part 4

DISCLAIMER: I love Yuri on Ice. No, listen, you don’t understand, I! LOVE! YURI! ON! ICE! Deeply! It’s very special, extremely important to me. It has touched my heart in ways that few stories have, it’s one of my favourite things across any media. I’ve recommended it to everyone I know. There’s not a single character I dislike. I have cosplay plans. My phone’s ringtone is History Maker. Every night before bed I read fanfiction. I ordered the official soundtrack. Currently on my desk sits my mini christmas tree sporting an acrylic charm of the main trio and Makkachin. I’m wearing Yuuri on my shirt as I write this. Ok? We’ve established this. I love, adore Yuri on Ice, and I wish I could be feeling for the finale the same levels of pure joy the episodes have been giving me every week since it aired. But I’m not.

ANOTHER DISCLAIMER: Victuuri is god tier OTP. Words aren’t enough to properly express how much this relationship means to me. I never questioned canon status, I was even sure it would be achieved before it actually happened. I’m not questioning the canon status, I’m not questioning how important it is that we got a realistic romantic relationship between two men in a wildly popular sports anime. I’m looking at this purely from a narrative analysis angle when I say that Victuuri is one of the many elements of this anime that deserved better and was screwed over by the finale.

  1. Yuuri Katsuki’s character arc
  2. Yuri Plisetsky’s character arc
  3. Victor Nikiforov’s character arc
  4. The resolution of Victuuri
  5. Missing pieces and inconsistencies

HUGE THANKS to @soobaki for doing the beta on this monster and for the constant emotional support as I wrote it!

Warning: this is a long post.

Victuuri - on inspiring each other and meeting halfway

When analyzing the progression of Victor and Yuuri’s relationship one must keep in mind that we’re actually following two very different stories that happen to have a series of points where they converge.

There’s Yuuri’s story.

And there’s Victor’s story.

And it’s not just their beginnings that are drastically different: Victor and Yuuri are on completely different wavelengths when it comes to their relationship during the entire run of the series.

This would not be a bad thing if, instead of “during the entire series”, it was “for 11 episodes of the series”. But alas, the finale robbed us of having a proper romantic resolution, which would be the point where their individual stories would meet halfway to form the first chapter of a new beginning for them. The finale probably thinks it delivered that, but it didn’t.

It really didn’t.

Which is a shame, because the progression of Victuuri is amazing! It’s honestly one of the best written romantic relationships I’ve seen in media… up until a point, where the progression just seems to stop. And derail. All the while giving off the illusion that it continued to advance as it should have through the use of meaningful visual metaphors that actually don’t hold nearly as much weight as they should have because they do not correlate with the characters’ actions. It’s frustrating, because they almost got it right.

Again, I am NOT questioning the legitimacy, importance, or canon status of Victuuri. I am questioning its unsatisfying resolution, because it deserved way better!

I’m not even sure what to call this but this is basically live voice-acting of some of the lines from YOI, in this case -  some memorable Victuuri quotes.

Most of it is Yuuri’s monologue from episode 4, but there’s also a parts of the beach scene and the freaking airport scene.

If you’re gonna watch just one part of this vid then watch from 0:50 to 1:05 because that’s the part of the airport scene from ep 9 in which Victor says “I hope you never retire” and Yuuri says in tears “Let’s win the gold medal at the GPF”. The fact that they were doing this live and with no retakes during the event and it was still so perfect is just so amazing.

Also you gotta hear Toyonaga do that crying voice as Yuuri. You just have to.

(I won’t be translating this vid because it’s essentially just quotes from the anime, and I think not seeing the subtitles helps to focus on the emotions and the sheer skill of the actors, but let me just say that most of this is the part where Yuuri says that skaters’ competitive careers are short and he’s not sure how long his body will hold and how long Victor will stay with him but he’s praying to have as much of Victor’s time as he can. Just fyi.)

But anyway PLEASE GIVE THIS A LISTEN.
