Regulus gets bitten over the summer by Greyback but doesn't tell anyone out of fear. When he returns to Hogwarts, Remus can smell that there's another werewolf at school now.
He loses his mind, trying to figure out who it is, and when the full moon comes, he meets a beautiful black wolf with silver eyes. The other wolf is so scared, biting at itself and cowering away from him. Remus is gentle, pawing at the wolf, nipping at it to prevent any further harm.
Something about the smell is strangely familiar. He can't figure it out, but then notices Padfoot is frozen in place. Just staring at the new wolf with something akin to shock and sadness.
Remus realises that Padfoot and the new wolf have the same eyes.
