Zoey and Mira stopped talking about Eomma in front of her. Things got easier afterward. They moved to safer subjects. Zoey loves turtles and talks about what life was like in America. Mira loves fashion and is always willing to show off her dancing. Rumi told them about Eomma's farm and shop, about the different plants that were in her own private garden that Eomma had cordoned off just for her.

It was good, Rumi was starting to like them. Was maybe even willing to call them her frie-

("God, Celine is such a whore.")

Rumi should have known better.

("I won't ever understand how Celine could betray them like this?)

It was so stupid of her, but she just really hoped.

("All for a fucking demon too!)

That when they stopped talking about Eomma in front of her that it might have meant that they stopped insulting her in general. That they were starting to understand, to give Eomma just a little grace.

Rumi stood in front of the closed door to Zoey's room and listened to the all too familiar vitriol spew from her... coworkers... mouth for a minute before silently walking away.

😭😭😭

(This is awful and amazing thank you for sharing it with the world)

(Rumi starts pulling away again. Mira and Zoey can't get her to tell them what's wrong.)

Would deadbeat Miyeong be interested in transmasc Celine unaware that's it's Celine or would what happened with Rumi kind of scared her into not going out with men anymore?

Avatar

(My version of Miyeong is attracted to Celine period. She keeps accidentally dating men who basically look like the male version of Celine. Girl has a type.)

But like I do think the thing with Rumi (or specifically, the media and fan reactions) scared her off dating for a very long time.

(And the pregnancy convinced her to get an IUD)

So in this fun little side AU, Miyeong hasn't seriously dated pretty much ever. She had a massive crush on Celine (that comphet refused to let her acknowledge) and now there's this man in front of her that's basically exactly her type and doesn't seem intimidated by her (though he does seem a little shy) and is a very devoted single dad with a daughter that adores him (don't think about the baby don't think about the baby).

And the first thing she texts Third is "fuck I think I just met the most attractive man alive. Help."

So now she's like...invitating Celine to tea so they can talk about the summer program.

And Celine, internally, is going wtf.

Totally chill over here not picturing transman Celine with a motorcycle and undercut looking gorgeous enough it has Mi-Yeong stumbling over her words, but who's also an obviously deeply devoted girl dad. It's a goddamn tactical nuke to all Mi-Yeongs carefully crafted barriers.

Miyeong asking Rumi if it's alright to come home with her so she can talk to her father about summer opportunities at SLE. And Rumi telling her that, "appa won't be home until later but we can go to his shop?"

And Miyeong agrees because for the last hunter of this generation, she has all the time in the world.

You know the funniest version of the Deadbeat Miyeong AU is if it's remixed with the trans man Celine AU.

And just;

after everything blows up, Celine is out of the spotlight, never needs to be a "good role model TM" or do a performance again, and just goes fuck it. What better time to transition?

Rumi, who takes Miyeong to meet her single father (because she has, at this exact moment, completely forgotten that oh yeah, dad used to be in a girl group with this lady)

And Miyeong is discussing maybe Rumi has a future as an idol and what are his thoughts about sending his daughter to Jeju for the summer?

And Celine is just...fucking dying and sweating on the inside

@arashisterren 's tags.

Celine afterwards just shaking his head being like, "warn me next time, okay? Your appa can only handle so many surprises."

***

Thing is, in this one, I think Rumi is significantly less angry at the world and at SLS because her dad could frame the scandal as a super shitty situation but one that ultimately turned out for the best because otherwise, he'd probably never have transitioned.

(Plus not being recognizable as Celine made it a lot easier and being a man meant people praising him for raising his daughter instead of the misogyny he had gotten as a single mom)

(Which I think means that Rumi has a harder time in training because it's the first time insults towards Celine have been so in her face.)

Do you think Celine, post-canon, pre-reconciliation would ever just go traveling or leave Jeju Island without telling Huntrix?

Avatar

I do think she might go off of Jeju island to travel, maybe to China or somewhere else, for a wellness retreat, re-center herself and all that. But I don't think she wouldn't tell the girls or at least Rumi about it because secrecy is what drove Rumi to ask her for assisted-suicide, so if she just...left without a notice, Rumi might interpret it as confirmation that Celine didn't want her, to the point of not even wanting to be in the same country as her, and now that Rumi achieved what she wanted, and Celine finally fulfilled her role as mentor, she can finally be free of Rumi. And despite how wrong she went about it, Celine's intention was ultimately to protect Rumi from a world that would tear her apart (literally and figuratively) for being a different kind in every sense of that word, she wouldn't want Rumi to hate herself even more.

If Celine had an ounce of love for Rumi (which she makes it very clear she does), she would tell them. But it's probably going to be a somewhat formal text or letter because 1.) The girls might not want to see her which would make her flight from Jeju to Seoul all for nothing, 2.) As of where the movie ended, Rumi and Celine's relationship is left ambiguous and we don't know if they reconciled, so Celine might feel like, right now, she really doesn't have the right to talk casually to Rumi, even if Rumi is her child. She's not going to bow to Rumi now or anything (they're still essentially mother and daughter, and mothers are always above their daughters in the social hierarchy), but what right does she have to speak warmly after everything, to speak as if nothing happen, as if their relationship isn't different now?

Polytrix headcanon -

Mira and Zoey have been trying to teach Rumi how to relax after the Idol Awards.

Zoey tries to get Rumi into gaming but it backfires because Rumi gets super competitive and now they're looking for an e-sports competition for her to join lol

you know noodlejaq’s Shattered AU? People have been sending songs about betrayal and stuff (like The Knife In My Back by Alex Benjamin, for example).

Can you imagine Celine from the deadbeat Mi-yeong AU writing these for herself, to release some of the hurt and frustration, and at some point Rumi discovers/finds them or hears her sing? And when she has to go to train with the hunters she hums them or sings them.

Even though her mom stayed far away from the entertainment industry these days (and to be honest, Rumi always found it hard to imagine her mom -- with her hair pulled back in a practical ponytail and strong arms from hauling stuff back at the farm and in the backrooms of her store -- as an idol), she never lost her need to create.

the last gift Miyeong ever gave anyone was her most precious treasure (Rumi) and it was to Celine

A scene that I desperately want in the Deadbeat Miyeong outline (that, to be clear, does not currently exist);

It's a while after the Duo have found Rumi, the last hunter of this generation. They've noticed how Rumi acts and moves is achingly familiar and Rumi's lore drops about her childhood (aka Rumi's guilt trips) are working splendidly.

It's very late, the girls are all asleep, Miyeong and Third are still up because it's getting close to the anniversary of when Celine left (they're the only ones who keep track of this anniversary date -- the real one) and they never sleep very well around this time.

I think it might be easier for Celine and the Duo to reconcile than for Rumi and the Duo to reconcile.

Like Celine and the Duo are in their 40s. They've had time to dwell (even if most of it was avoiding the issue) and regret and be angry. And at this point in their lives, they're just tired and they're ready for this to stop hurting them.

(Which is not to say there will not be yelling because there are absolutely days where the past presses too closely and all the pain and grief comes flooding back in)

Meanwhile Rumi is like in that 18-21 age range where her mom struggling made up half her life and her anger is fresh and she's young and ready to fist fight the entire world. And she's not ready to just let the Duo off the hook.

(Celine explains it's not about letting them off the hook or them making up for what they did or didn't do. It's about moving on because holding onto the pain and anger hurts.

And Rumi just says she can angry enough for the both of them.)

So I just read your addition on the Gumiho Celine post from a couple weeks ago, where the mentors give Miyeong Celine's bead as a charm for her norigae, and where, eventually, Rumi gets the bead without knowing what it is and without knowing the consequences.

What would happen you think if Rumi ever found out? The guilt and horror of basically having the power (and unknowingly having used the power) to control Celine?

(Also the horror of Rumi having said just once “ugh, stop hugging me”, probably forgetting about it and afterwards convincing herself that Celine doesn't want to hug her anymore - how many little commands would have been said throughout the years and would have to be undone... 👀)

Avatar

Oh yeah, the little instructions Rumi would have given by accident- thought of them as questions if she ever thought of them at all. Grammar’s a slippery beast- it’s so easy, isn’t it, to remember a “Please take me to the park” as “Will you take me to the park, please?” especially with years between your request and the revelation.

Ooh delightfully angsty. I'm imagining Rumi trying to give the bead back and Celine not wanting to take it 😔

So like…. times out of ten I don’t like the ‘ character some how becomes a kids and their childhood shocks people’ but I lowkey love the idea for Rumi.

So a weeks/months after canon she gets poof-Ed to about five. Maybe younger and she’s SO polite and SO quiet and it freaks Mira and Zoey out. Because Rumi has barely really talked about her childhood and they don’t want to think the worse of Celine but they don’t KNOW anymore. Like Celine has been lying to them for years and clearly has never trusted them and now here Rumi is like. Scary obedient. So their minds are reaching really dark conclusions but they HAVE to contact Celine because what the fuck are they supposed to do??? With a little Rumi??? What kind of magic is this and has Celine seen it before????

Mira is like ‘I swear to GOD if Rumi so much as flinches I’m going to burn her house down. All of her houses.’

Only for Rumi to absolutely book it towards Celine the second she sees her. She’s immediately a different kid— loud, pushy and a little obnoxious. She’s hanging off of Celine’s arm and trying to talk over her. She’s going ‘Ce-Ce, Ce-Ce, Ce-Ce’ for like ten minutes.

And Celine is so clearly like. Fondly annoyed. She’s keeping up better in her conversation with Mira and Zoey than they are even as Rumi demands that Celine hold out her arms so Rumi can use her to do a flip.

Meanwhile, Rumi is just being super polite and obedient because she's living through a kidnapping movie rn (and Celine will burst in any minute to take care of the bad people)

The girls getting to meet the true peak spoiled nepo baby Rumi form.

The little girl who was absolutely polite and respectful to strangers and other people because she was taught that way, but who is also a feral gremlin who wants her way and it will be her way now.

Tiny Rumi who's being called 'Princess' and 'my love', silly little nicknames instead of her actual name which is only used when she's in trouble thankyouverymuch.

Rumi, old enough to be perfectly capable of walking anywhere on her own. Also Rumi, demanding uppies at every possible moment.

Also, baby Rumi vs Derpy.

There’s a few things I’ve been wondering for a while, does Miyeong remember anything about Rumi from when she was born? Like does she even remember the day she gave birth to Rumi? Or what her daughter’s name was? Or the fact that she had purple hair? Does she think it’s just a coincidence that Rumi’s birthday is the same as the day she gave birth to the demon child? Does Rumi dye her hair black in this au? Was Celine the one that named Rumi?

Avatar

Miyeong doesn't remember anything except that the baby (it's always "the baby", she doesn't want to claim it even in her own mind) had patterns.

She never gives the baby a name. She honestly even forgets what day the birth took place. She's basically tried to completely forget it even happened (she can't but she does the best she can to make it happen).

I think Rumi was born with like little wisps of hair that just looked black and her purple hair didn't grow in until later.

And no, Rumi doesn't dye her hair but it is quite a bit shorter than movie Rumi. Maybe something short and spiky? Idk yet.
