Luke Prokop is 23 NOW btw. he was NINETEEN YEARS OLD when he became the first openly gay NHLer.
#and even then it's a technicality bc although he was under contract with the preds when he came out he actually hasn't played an nhl game!!#so there are still no openly gay players who have *played* for an NHL team past or present#remembering why I wrote a sociology paper about this in my first year of university lol#hockey#corynn.txt
I've talked about this documentary a number of times over the years, but if anyone would like to learn more about the systemic homophobia in the NHL and hockey in general, and the impact on its gay players, please watch The Legacy of Brendan Burke (2010). This was pre-Brock McGillis, pre-Luke Prokop; he was completely by himself. Everyone who watches hockey knows Brian Burke but not enough people know about his son and what a trailblazer he was.
