For now my game is going great and is fun ! (on very small complain, I can't give the name I want to the gun because "é" is a " forbidden character" , this romance language dicrimintion! One more opression caused by the rigidity of the ruler! We need to tople this corrupt Nobility and let the Barehanders lead us to a beter futur where even french can be accepted !

AW, I'm sorry, I wanted to make the system smart enough to handle more special characters, but I'm not good at programming text validation and so just I ended up going with something simple and stable.

Like you, I will choose to blame this on Vestur's prejudice against the French and not myself. ;) Very glad to hear you're enjoying the story thus far though!

Continuing on my last ask, There is a bug where investing points into strength, then retrying character creation, you can get more points. Is this an intended bug?

The bug eventually caps out, but it is powerful.

Avatar

I swear this has been reported before and that I had fixed it, but maybe I... didn't? Should be patched now though!

I hope everyone who exploited this bug enjoys their illegal beefed out Quincy. (It honestly shouldn't mess up your game experience -that- much. He'll just be freakishly talented AS he blunders his way through the early story, bless.)

During the Where the wild goose goes quest, I received the following error message, which stayed even after reloading.

is this a known issue? For reference, I have Elijah in my party, not Lucas.

Avatar

Wasn't known to me, thanks for bringing it to our attention! Don't worry - it's nothing that hurts your save data, just a typo on the programming end that was preventing Elijah's dialog from being drawn properly. The issue should be corrected on both web play and the downloadable version of the game now.

(I'm surprised nobody caught this earlier... in variable scenes like this, some sneaky typos can persist unnoticed for quite a while!)

"It would seem that, having blessed the South with birds of every hue, and the Midland with all manner of beast needed to keep a farmer in clothe, milk, and meat, the Architect saw fit to confine his most awesome and terrible creatures to the North, caged from civilization by mountain, ice, and endless night. Should you by way of business need to enter that loathsome gaol, knowledge of these in-mates might save your hide."

- Beasts of the Architect, 1790. Excerpt from "Introduction to the Northern Kingdom".

I'm absolutely obsessed with this game and literally made this tumblr account just to keep up with (bad idea to play ep2 during final exam season because now it's all i can think of). The characters are compelling, the art is gorgeous and the plot is intriguing. I love learning about the world through the codex, especially the bestiary. The general populace of Vesture might dislike hares but i love them. I could say so much more but sadly theres a word limit. You're both so talented!

Sorry/Not sorry/You're welcome for being a distraction during exams. ;) (That's a battle I was also busy fighting when this was sent. I hope you are enjoying the break!)

We're chuffed to hear Vestur is an enjoyable world to read about. The codex is optional and primarily meant to be good for a refresher when needed, but we always hope some players will read it recreationally... a decent amount of work goes in to updating it each episode.

Hares might pose a terrible bite risk, but... they're rather cute about it, aren't they?

Thank you so much for the sweet comments! It means a lot to receive messages like this.

Do people with Haretouch tend to focus on specific things just generally, like another haretouched might really like thinking and talking about, say, plants? Or do most just prefer Hares? Is the Haretouch meant to be a metaphor for neurodivergence (specifically autism) or is it a coincidence?

Avatar

I'll address the metaphor question first: the haretouch is not meant to be a direct allegory for neurodivergence, per se. But it IS a fantasy trait that parallels some real-life experiences -- particularly those marginalized by society, as haretouched people are pushed to Vestur's margins.

I would not say it's a coincidence that Quincy strikes people as neurodivergent… but the haretouch itself shouldn't be approached as a stand-in for an exact real-world demographic. ;)

As for your question on interests, the core aspect of being haretouched is a connection with hares and the ability to bond with them. Whether it’s an all-consuming obsession, a guarded secret shame, or even just a casual fact of one's life, a haretouched person will always have what the rest of Vestur considers to be a socially unacceptable preoccupation.

That said, haretouched people do have a reputation for being monomathic and particular in their interests. You can see a bit of this in Quincy’s narration (Quincy with the Plutonist trait has an interest in geology and notices more specific details about rocks and stonework, while Quincy with the Wilding trait thinks more about trees and notices details in the make of wooden objects) and the way that other haretouched characters approach their interests. In the story thus far, the only point of comparison you've met is Imani, but pretty much every haretouched character we write has some additional strange interest or topic they’re "too enthusiastic" about.

(Incidentally, one of them IS into gardening toxic plants!)

Question: Will haretouched parents have a haretouched child?

The mechanisms of who ends up haretouched and why is murky. There does appear to be some sort of heritable aspect, but it's not so consistent and predictable as haretouched + haretouched = haretouched. (Or haretouched + normie = haretouched.) The haretouched are known for dying alone and often dead ends on the family tree themselves, so if the curse was passed parent-to-child it'd be even rarer than it already is. Still, haretouched people can usually point to at least one other weird uncle or unpleasant grandmother or nomad ancestor who was known or suspected to be haretouched as well.

That said, the haretouch also has a nasty habit of arising in families that have no history of it. And sometimes a normal adult is spontaneously stricken with the haretouch after a great misfortune or a tragic event!

Then again, there has been long-running incentive to keep such things hushed, especially among Noble families and commoners of status who seek a respectable image, so it's practically impossible to say for certain that any Northern bloodline is "free" of the haretouch. Even the Nobles who crow loudest about the touch being a barbarian curse likely have it in their lineage, as many - but not all - of the founding Lords were haretouched (as Lamonte so boldly admits here).

Love the new episode and Imani is quickly becoming my fav character!. I think there might be a small bug in the new episode tho. When I chose the dialogue option where you tell Imani her hare has grown when you encounter her while on a run with Quintrell's hare, she still refers to her as "Licorice" even if you named her something else. I'm unsure if this happens elsewhere as this is the only scene where I noticed this error

Ah, yeah, this is a mistake we make a lot (typing out her name as "Licorice" instead of invoking the custom name variable "$licorice"). We usually catch it, but occasionally it slips past our notice.

Should be fixed in the latest version now, thanks for giving us the heads up! Happy to hear you're enjoying Ep2 and getting to know Imani!

Hi, I'm currently playing the new episode and I think there might be a few bugs? In the new episode quintrell tells Lucas that he lost the debate against him even tho I won and when i clicked on traits, it says quintrell was a blue major even tho I chose red. I uploade my game from an old pre-update save but idk how much that matters

Thanks for letting us know! Fixing this is going to be my priority of the day. I've gotten one other report from someone with near-identical issues, and I think I have a good lead on what went wrong here.

If you have the time, it would be appreciated if you could send the affected .save file to our email ([email protected]) - it's not mandatory, but it might help me work out the problem a little faster.

Incorrect debate outcomes & meur majors have been fixed as of version 1.031, along with the issues regarding codex entries hiding themselves upon reaching Episode 2!

SOUTHERN KINGDOM FASHION

This is a writeup I've been wanting to do for a long time! The fashion design surrounding the Southern Kingdom characters can look a bit random at times, but there is a method to my madness.

The "visdev" for Forever Gold had barely begun when I became co-developer; Dan had some ideas for how the Middle and Northern kingdoms looked and how their people dressed and the inspirations she wanted to take there, but the Southern Kingdom was pretty much a big shrug. The root idea was always that the Southerners were going to be merchants and Vestur's link to the rest of the world, and they were supposed to be very visually distinct from either the Midland or the North, but there wasn't much more to go on than that. In fact, when I fielded Dan for a root inspiration to start with, she said something to the tune of “I don’t know, pick something really out there, like ancient Minoan.”

And so, I did. Along with a bunch of other eclectic, geographically-distant inspirations. And now we are here! Read on for a more in-depth dissection.
