regarding things that happened in the past (since in the au a few years already passed since the unveiling) I'll keep them a secret for now (aka I have yet to decide which route I'm gonna go for, because the past affects the future strongly. The present is just mindless fun for the most part so it's ok lol). The reason yugi did what he did on the other hand is mostly decided. And you're not far off as to why :)))

As for yugi and honda, they definitely saw each other in the dome. The way the dome looks from the inside hasn't been fully finalized but I have some ideas, as it's supposed to represent a liminal space which follows the strongest entity's authority in it and how they represent themselves (not sure how to explain this one just yet, but hey part of the fun is not fully understanding the weirdness that is around you)

It does seem to be where yugi is staying/spending most of his time in :)))

The first few years for beyonders were definitely rough, you can imagine all the new slurs made and all the mass panic that affected the people on both sides. The thing about beyonders/beyondian(haven't decided on what to call the people the veil hide) is that the veil worked too well in hiding them, so they needed charms and the likes to be able to fit into society and continue life somewhat normally in it, but the moment the veil broke, it broke most protective charms with it, especially in domino city as it was the origin center of it breaking, which meant, if you were a beyonder, you kinda lost your real life face id and had to get it remade, and stronger too.

Some have stopped hiding it once it broke tho, as they saw no logic behind it, but some, like Anzu and miho, would rather pass for humans for as long as possible, whether to be treated normally or to have better chances at succeeding in their dreams, so it was definitely a shock.

It doesn't help that she kinda hates her clan for some of the deals they made, and want to distance herself from them as much as possible

The reason she wants to escape domino city however mostly comes from her dream of going to America and becoming a professional dancer

Fun fact I'm kinda split on whether I want the unveiling effect to be world wide (which is what I'm going for rn) or just in domino city (some of the OG concepts revolved on it) because if it's world wide then that leaves room for some world building and lore and such, but if it's just domino city then I just can't stop thinking about occult/paranormal ryou moving to this city in hopes of seeing all the weird stuff he keeps hearing about, but he does so by being kaiba's secretary, and so kaiba and his paranormal-defying field is always nearby.

Atem is atem, for the most part, but is a lot closer to his SE0 counterpart thanks to being an active curse (kinda?), so his relationship with yugi is a bit complicated...

Idk it's almost like hypnotizing the host to think like the ghost of the item, as if passing their own thoughts for the other. I wonder if it's especially easier for yami since he himself believed he was just another personality of yugi. I wonder if that's why yugi thought so as well, rather than coming to the conclusion of a pharaoh spirit haunting him.

Yugi was proven times and times again to not only have good intelligence, but also good intuition (which he mainly uses for games), and like, it's believable for him to come to the split personality conclusion, yes, but he's also the grandson of someone who believes in the supernaturals and spirits and such, and the whole puzzle situation kinda reeks of a spirit situation,+ shadi seemed to believe something similar and said so to him (which can be interpreted as both situations, but to go for the normal one in a weird situation is just weird)

I believe denial had a big big part in this, but I do wonder if a bigger part was yami's firm belief in knowing who he is. It's a big deal to Yami after all, and we do kinda see how utterly lost and conflicted he became once he knew the truth.

So in short : while I think yugi is a big denial-as-a-coping-mechanism guy, I think yami is an even bigger one

Second of all, Answering your question, Yugi's life leading up to the unveiling was roughly the same, which is a bit weird since he is a witch (you tend to have weird life as a beyonder, you see)

And that's cause he isn't a good witch, and had almost no abilities whatsoever other than being able to perceive the beyond (the things the veil was trying to hide, like monsters and entity and magical acts etc etc), so he lived normally for the most part, or at least tried to, and kinda failed from time to time, as things from the beyond likes to mess with what can see them.

Strong entities can simply create their own liminal space and bring humans in it, that way humans can perceive them (and also why superstitions and rumors exists heavily in this world), so it's a fair chance with them. Weak ones, however, like to target those that can see them, as it's more fun that way, and what's a better target than a witch that is only a witch in name?

His grandpa tried to help with protective charms and the likes (specifically ones from the mazaki clan, as they are best known for their strong charms) but even charms have their limits. He had to be saved by monster hunters one too many times lol

Other than the occasional problem with the paranormal tho, his life stayed mostly the same till chapter one in the manga. That's where the deviation really started, especially since a week after is when the unveiling in incident happened. I'm not gonna spoil much rn cause I'm actually planning to make art for that part, but just know that no one from the nerd herd had a fun time during that week, especially Joey, Yugi, and Honda

anzu mostly came out of it unscratched thanks to her lucky charms (same for miho), which had her a safe distance away from school on her way to hang out with miho. But it was still rough since her protection charms broke, outing her for onlookers as a tooth fairy. Here's an art for the scene:

It's not very obvious in the art, but all beyonders at that moment felt a disturbance, aka all our cast members felt it (except for Joey, as he is human. And Yugi, as he doesn't have the ability to sense such stuff. Not to say they didn't notice anything wrong, because they definitely did. Hard not to when the whole thing happens right in front of you eyes)

As for Honda's erasure, his isn't actually the same type that happened to Yugi! His is more of a "if you try to think about him your mind just swerve around the thought", so unlike Yugi, his existence in other people's mind and their memories of him, + his documents and pictures, all still exists, and it's more of a temporarily situation thanks to him taking a kaiba corps job to search the black dome in the city center (that thing is the reason no one is able to think about him. No one can even think about that thing as a whole, except for a select few.)

protective charms can be burned to fight off the effect temporarily tho! And getting out of the dome solve it too!

Yugi's erasure on the other hand is much more tough to deal with, and, unlike the unveiling which he didn't really mean to do, the erasure kinda was his fault.... If joey remembers what happened, then a classic shirt strangling will be in order lol
