“‘It is, it’s one of the greatest parts you’ll ever play as an actress. Except it’s the reverse of Hamlet because he spends three hours worrying and does nothing, whereas Medea takes an hour and 15, massacres the whole fucking stage and walks off. But it’s great because she uses every shred of femininity that she has to do it, and she also has the complexity of guilt.’”

(Tags by @elucipher) #the role of medea isn’t about femininity #or not straightforwardly about femininity #medea’s story before the play begins is of a woman who allows herself to be caged within the strictures of tradition and patriarchy #after revealing in her rescue of jason that she’s far too powerful and ruthless and violent for such a cage to be able to contain her #when the play opens medea doesn’t behave like any woman in greek tragedy #except aeschylus’ unwomanly monster clytaemnestra who treads the stage like a general looking upon an army #or a king looking upon his war-ripe kingdom (‘that woman she manoeuvres like a man’) #medea controls the stage from first to last #she has the lion’s share of words; she uses diction you’d expect from a male character #she taunts and slanders and jibes like a hero from homer’s epics #and she’s powerfully preoccupied with defending her τιμή (smth like ‘honour’ or ‘reputation’) just as a homeric hero would be #her fierce intolerance of being mocked and ridiculed and laughed at conjures up the ajax of homer & sophocles #this isn’t feminine behaviour; to euripides’ audience this would be anathema & perversion #and it’s only more monstrous when she assumes the face of a meek & doting wife #so that she can enact the kind of sly underhanded revenge odysseus would be proud of #to kill jason would be an act of passion; ruining him utterly is devious and ambitious and boundlessly malicious–and more terrifying by far #particularly because when her revenge is brought to light in blood she betrays not a scrap of remorse #meta #medea #we sing to you dark gods beneath the earth #she smiled like a knife

[trying to insult a person's dog-like devotion to someone but not wanting to make them sound too cool about it] keep your fucking dog in a purse

oh my god just saw two pirate ships get into a fender bender right outside my apartment

two dudes with hook hands and trifold hats are currently out there yelling about who had right of way

peg legs?

no, they don't have peg legs. god, that's such an offensive stereotype. learn some shit about pirates instead of making yourself look ignorant on my post

…eyepatches?

of course they had eyepatches what are you stupid

"why do girls always go to the bathroom in groups" oh my god how many times must we go through this. for the last fucking time: only groups of no less than three and no more than five may enter; all those who enter must leave, and all those who enter must contribute. the door remains opens for nine seconds,
