Wait I’m sorry parent/child incest fic?????? Why does that exist? Why do you KNOW that exists?????? What the fuck 🤢

I feel like you can sort of tell how long (or not) someone has existed in fannish spaces by how outraged they get about things like this. Like rings in a tree trunk lol. I've been in so many fandoms. At least one, but often multiple at the same time, since I was a teenager. I've seen just. Everything.

Sex pollen. Mpreg. Incest. Monster fucking. Tentacles. Pairings like Snape/Hermione that would be crazy abusive and illegal if they were real. Wild kinks. The babygirlification of all kinds of villains. So much RPF (the 'I sincerely believe they are secretly a couple' kind and the 'this is fictional but it's fun to imagine they're in love' kind.)

You learn to just scroll past shit you don't like or unfollow people or filter tags. The tldr of fandom is that humans are weird as fuck. And creative, and unhinged, and traumatized, and talented. And amazing. And every single thing that you clutch your pearls about 'well surely someone doesn't want to read/write THAT!' - someone does. Probably lots of people do. And those people are perfectly normal. In their offline lives, they're parents and siblings and they have jobs and friends and they go about their lives and they don't cause any harm. And that's the sticking point. There's this really concerning, frankly highly Evangelical idea that if someone enjoys the wrong kind of fiction, they are obviously a Bad Person. But nothing is that simple, and thought crimes aren't real, and you definitely have some thoughts or ideas that someone else would find fucked up. You don't have to like every kind of fic that exists. I certainly don't. But shaming people for their harmless fantasies about fictional characters is so boring. I saw Goody Proctor enjoying a Toxic Ship! Good for you, I'll alert the pope.

they should make a video game where you play as an autistic character and there is a meter that shows you how close to a total meltdown you are due to the overwhelming stimuli and another matter that shows you how much of a weirdo you look like to others and you have to try to balance between having a meltdown and completely masking. and also you’re trying to solve a murder or something

I think it should add challenges but not be game breaking if you decide to sacrifice weird meter for meltdown meter.

I think it's important to remember that every single religion can be twisted for violence and oppression and abuse and control. Yes, including the one that you think can't be. But quickly, before anti-theists start saying that religion is an inherently evil violence accelerant, remember that this is true for any ideology, including anti-theism. Violence and oppression and abuse and control happens wherever there are people who think that those things will help them get what they want.

man having your life even a little bit together will really make you realize how chronically sleep-deprived and poorly fed and under-enriched everyone is and then when they turn to you to implicitly agree that that's just the natural state of existing you feel like the asshole for being like "actually I think you might benefit from eating breakfast regularly and picking up a new hobby"

obviously the worst trend that came from big games companies trying to emulate TF2's success was microtransactions, but i think a close second is meet-the-team style marketing.

Meet The Team, the series of shorts that introduced each of tf2's 9 classes, helped boost the game's popularity because, at the time, it had never been done before. valve put a lot into defining the unique personalities and artstyle of the characters, so in-character introductions to said characters was a good way to tease the game. Because TF2 was a popular, regularly maintained game and because Gmod and SFM allowed fans to use the characters for whatever they wanted, the mercenaries quickly became monoliths, cementing themselves as recognizeable archetypes across the internet. Valve's dedication to innovation, quality and uniqueness made it so that even someone born less than a decade ago who'd never played TF2 before would recognize Heavy Weapons Guy's face.

Unfortunately the rest of the AAA game publishing space saw this success and immediately tried to replicate it. Overwatch is the only game whose legacy even came close to TF2's, and most of that is based on porn made of the characters in blender. Nobody else has reached that legacy, and to this day marketing for PvP shooters foregoes gameplay trailers and information about what to expect in the game in favor of showing you a 3-minute comedy sketch about how much of a quirky wisecracker [HERO NAME HERE] is.

pacific rim commentary

i took a few notes from guillermo del toro’s commentary on pacific rim:

  • gypsy danger was designed to look like a machine from ww2 and to have the gait of a “gunslinger”
  • he talks a lot about how in movies “form is content” and that he designs not for “eye candy, but for eye protein”; narrative is submerged in the audiovisual details and the details are everywhere in pacific rim
  • he is constantly juxtaposing massive elements w small details for scale; like a giant battle and a little red shoe, to contribute to the sense of “awe and majesty”
  • the movie deals w types “the pilot…the scientist” so the characters had to be textured w minimal gestures; mako and raleigh (two of the main characters) have some of the fewest lines in the film
  • ww2 aesthetics; bomb refuge, overalls, working for rations were all incorporated
  • not a movie about one hero but a composite of humanity; the world saving the world; a movie about togetherness, connecting, and trust
  • Mako is coded blue bc of her origins in the kaiju; blue stains her heart and her hair
  • every character has to learn to trust all the others
  • all the characters get a Hero Moment
  • re: the fighting stick scene; “if this was a 19th century movie they would be dancing the waltz”
  • the little red shoe is the absolute heart of the movie
  • quiet power is still power; mako as a strong character w quiet determination
  • the Russian jaeger team are so hard-core they have no escape pod
  • some of the Battle of Hong Kong was done in miniatures and models not just cgi
  • “This film is the most controlled joyful exercise in image creation of my life”
  • one of guillermo’s fave moments is when newt and hermann drift
  • “No one carries the suit like idris elba”
  • “No matter how many times you drift with someone you still have to say I love you”
  • structured the three fights for raleigh as; losing a partner; gaining a partner; saving a partner (”it won’t happen to [him] again”)
  • it was important to guillermo that the humans saved the world, not machines or ballistic power; humanity.
