I'm starting to get really fucking sick of this whole 'autism doesn't have a look' crowd for Barbie's new autistic doll. Like yeah autism is an invisible disability for SOME. My sunflower lanyard, communication cards, fidget, headphones, AAC on my phone and constant stimming in public mean people clock it fkn immediately especially when I'm on my own. I have a look. My clothing, my assistive devices, my stimming, the way I walk and talk.
And the thing is everyone who seems to have a major problem with autistic Barbie are people who don't use or need these items. They go on and on about autism not having a look and all Barbie's can be autistic, and it should just be an accessory pack. Which utterly ignores the fact MSN/HSN autistics CAN have a look and completely removes the idea that sure people can pretend dolls are autistic but having one that IS in universe autistic is so fucking different.
It really just feels like whataboutmeism that's really fkn gross and once again like people are talking over the people who this Barbie represents.
I need to rant about that autistic Barbie doll badly so sorry for the wall of text
People getting mad at the new autistic Barbie and calling her a stereotype are legit why I think we need to do Noah’s arc again and start humanity over. I saw a girl on tiktok who looked EXACTLY Like the doll, shes a stereotype? Okay then what about it? It doesn’t mean it’s bad. Like obviously they based her on real people/experiences (and they did actually get autistic people to work on the doll) so why are you mad that the autistic Barbie for sharing things that are common with autistic people??
Autistic people who like colorful stuff and use fidget spinners and wear ear defenders exist in the real world. Autistic people of color exists and autistic women of color are under represented, please get over yourself just because this ONE doll isn’t just like you doesn’t make it bad.
And seeing people say it’s a harmful stereotype genuinely makes me mad because what about it is harmful? Just say youre ableist man :/ I’ve even seen autisitc people have this opinion it’s like?? Okay?? you don’t use fidget toys and you don’t wear headphones what am I supposed to do? Clap for you? There are autistic kids who like Barbie who will love this doll. It doesn’t have to be for you. This flavor of ableism kills me like omfg why do you need autistic people to be perfect just let us be 🤦🏾♂️
