I got to redraw this character for the wonderful Talvi~
this may be an Unpopular Opinion (even on tumblr) but like the 8-hour workday is just Too Gotdamn Long
like even sitting in an office for eight hours a day isn’t particularly pleasant (or healthy, as we are beginning to see) but when we’re talking about doing *actual work* for that same amount time it gets pretty fucking brutal
doing literally *anything* (even leisure activities) for eight hours straight tends to be less than enjoyable but when we’re talking about things like construction, landscaping, factory work, and hell, even foodservice and retail, eight hours is a fucking ETERNITY
i might just be a lazy weak-willed bitch but honestly i think i’m not entirely wrong
this was being worked towards by leftist labor unions way back in the day after the time of FDRs new deal. people in the 40s and 50s were already starting to realize that we no longer actually needed an 8 hour work day or even a 5 day work week.
even with the comparatively primitive factory tech of the time we were already creating a huge amount of excess production back then and companies were making massive amounts of profit. So it already stood to reason that companies should either let their employees work less and thus each employee could work a shorter shift without lowering the yearly compensation of each employee, or in cases where businesses provide an active service they would shorten the shift but hire more people to cover the necessary operating time. but of course that would mean less money for people at the top so companies fought back hard and we ended up with nixon’s bullshit and so on and now its considered the norm for us to spend the vast majority of our lives doing work that really just amounts to waste.

The IWW realised this and were fighting for it all the way back in the 1930s. This is a take with a lot of historical and theoretical grounding, OP, so you’re standing in good stead.
I’d also like to add it’s also been studied and scientifically proven that after 6 hours, we have an extremely noticeable drop in productivity. Sweden saw nothing but benefits from a 6-hour work day, including worker productivity, happiness, and half the amount of sick-leave used when applied to nurses.
MTV, the channel that revolutionized the music industry, has today said its final Goodbye by moving to a digital-only model. Its 24-hour music channel has ceased to be officially its transmissions.
The end came with a nod to its beginnings, the last broadcast was the iconic videoclip of “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, the same one that inaugurated the history of MTV on August 1, 1981. In this way, the channel closed after 44 years, with the same song that defined its birth

A noble project in need of volunteers and donations.
Girl you're not selling this nearly hard enough. I've been following them for a couple years now and everything PMP does blows my mind.
- The project founder is Christopher Havens, who was a high-school drop out, then addict, then dealer, then killed another dealer in 2010. He was sentenced to 25 years, and once he entered prison he got stuck in solitary for a year. (Side note: the UN Mandela Rules limit solitary to 15 days. The US penal system is monstrous). While in solitary they gave him a packet of math problems. When he finished those he kept going with GED math, and then through what the prison library had. When he exhausted that he wrote to a math journal for help. A few years later, he published on the arXiv in 2020, had a couple more publications in 2023, and has another one coming out in 2025. The papers are on continued fractions, but he's also studying computation theory.
- Recognizing the meditative, transformative, and even empowering qualities of studying mathematics, he founded the PMP to find and help prisoners like him. Outside help started organizing, and they sent books to prisons, put together material, helped some more prisoners publish. Eventually the PMP put together an app for the shitty prison tablets that could do Python, JavaScript, and LaTeX. I'll just link their blog post about that, but long story short, getting an app approved by a state prison system sounds fucking Herculean.
- Last week the Washington State Clemency and Pardon Board voted unanimously in Chris's favor. Next the governor has to give final approval to his clemency but it looks good. Hopefully the probation officer will let him attend conferences.
And, yeah, at first I was just like "huh, that's an unusual mathematical achievement" but there's deeper meaning. Humanizing prisoners, demonstrating their value and potential, realizing radical personal transformation. The impact on a person's life of systemic disadvantage and oppression and just plain shit luck. That Gould quote about Einstein's equals wasting away in cotton fields and sweatshops.
hi, i've dug in the game's files a bit and found a bit about pronouns *e/h*/h*s being specified for the gender "splat", was that something planned as a neopronouns set for characters that ended up not being used?
At one point those were Muistis’s pronouns but I realised the pronouns would come up so rarely that players would be completely confused when it happened, and fell back to they/them as more familiar.
Splat gender used to be an option back on LambdaMOO (which also avoids the ‘how do you PRONOUNCE that?’ question because it was a text-based environment) and I knew a few people who used them then, but in testing it just didn’t work the way I wanted it to.
happy new year now sign up for my sticker club (this is january's reward)
